Does anyone remember famous rumors about games that were just that- rumors? Did you believe in them and try to acheive the goals needed? Some I remember:

GALAGA: You could somehow get a TRIPLEship. Not!

Q*BERT: The prototype game let Q*bert shoot things from his nose (it was even called BOOGERSNOT!); rumor: some games still had the code and some trick let you shoot "mucous" balls. NOT!

2600 Donkey Kong: there was a third screen hidden. NOT!

Double Dragon (and many other fighters with women in them): you could knoock off their tops so they were topless. NOT!
(in your dreams!)

DEFENDER: There was a way to make your ship invincible. NOT!

Any Pac man game: You could pass through monsters when they were looking the other way. Actually, you CAN sometimes pass through monsters but it is due to a bug in the programs, not a trick. Also, there were rumors of a symbol AFTER the key, some books even listed it: Gold bars, silver bars, medals...NOT!

Super Mario Bros.: There were other minus worlds besides -1. NOT!

Any others out there?

(by the way, one trick I could not believe that turned out to be true: in Colecovision Smurf Rescue, on the last screen, you can make Smurfette lose her clothes! You actually CAN! Just turn around and go back to the last screen...watch Smurfette; her eyes close and her body turns solid blue! I think its just a bug but boy it sure LOOKS x-rated for a KIDS game!)

The All Bonds cheat from Goldeneye where you could be any of the other Bond actors.

I think Ermac in MKII was another one as well.

A hidden character would fight you named Shen Long if you defeated all opponents untouched in Street Fighter 2.

You could learn to throw a red fireball everytime in one of the Street Fighter 2 games.

I remember the Bond one, and I was pissed when I found out it wasnt true.

I remember each of these.  And oh how I tried to get to Sheng Long.  Freaking stupid April Fools EGM.  You had to beat everyone without losing a single round, not match, but win every round.  The best I ever got on the SNES SF2 was losing two rounds, once to Balrog and once to Vega.

As for the Bond one there were licensing issues but the actual portraits for each of the Bonds were viewable by using a game genie like program from within GoldenEye.

Actually, the Japanese Famicom version of Super Mario Bros. has World -1, -2, and -3, which follow one after the other, and they are much more interesting than the pathetic one we were left with.  Take a look at them here:

Here's one of Video game's urban legends... Probably the most notorious of them. The mysterious arcade game called Polyibus.

More than likely it's a bunch of hooey but it's a funny and interesting story none the less.

And who can forget the "secret code" for nude girls in Dead or Alive volleyball?  One magazine even published a phony code, causing hundreds of frustrated gamers to write nasty letters.
