Super Mario Allstars

Critic i'm surprised by your score of super mario allstars. A is way too high of a score. I'd give it a C. Not because the games are lousy, these games are all A+ in my book, that is when they are in original form. The games don't feel the same with the weaker super mario world sound effects, remixed music and enhanced super mario world graphics. The charm of these games are completely lost and the games feel less fun. I thought for sure you would complain about the updated look. The save system sure is nice however, but not enough for me to change my mind about buying the cart. Well at least I have three of the four for the nes. On a related note, will you ever get a famicom with disk system to play doki doki panic or super mario bros 2 japan. That japanese mario 2 is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite games even though its quite hard especially only with an emulator. Must contact university friend to get his famicom cartidge version of mario 2 japan.

For wii owners, don't expect the game as the virtual console is region locked.

The Wii Virtual Console is not region locked. The region lockout for the Super Nintendo was physical, as was the NES except in Europe I believe. People hear that the Wii is region locked for Wii games, and somehow stretch that to mean the Virtual Console is as well. The Virtual Console is simply a rom and a emulator.

Super Mario All-Stars was awesome. The updated graphics and sound really helped these games, especially Super Mario Brothers 2.

The updated games are still great. I would definitely prefer the original graphics though. The game still deserves an A just for bringing lost levels over.

Japanese version of Super Mario Brothers 2 is coming to the Virtual Console in America. It has already appeared on the ESRB website.

I don't get you... you don't like Super Mario All-Stars because it upgraded the games by giving them new graphics and remixed music? What? Super Mario All-Stars is one great example of how to make a collection, because these improved greatly on the originals.

Also, never check out the Castlevania series- there's a TON of Vampire Killer remixes.

Is that the Japanese original that SMB2 was based on, or just a different version of SMB2?

Well, I can understand where he's coming from. The original NES games in that format certainly had a timeless quality that the visually/aurally updated SNES versions, as good as they are, can't quite capture.

For example, playing Super Mario Bros 3 on the GBA/SNES doesn't feel quite the same as playing it on NES. Such is the belief of classic game purists.

Man, and people accuse ME of looking through rose-colored glasses at the past!....I thought SMAS was perfect, it upgraded the graphics while leaving the gameplay pretty much intact (minus the bugs and glitches)... I would rather play the updated versions; the one exception being "lost levels", I had more fun playing the "original" SMB 2 on SUPER MARIO DELUXE, for some reason I was able to get farther on the GBC version than on SMAS.

I'd bet if this games had been released with NO upgrades, people would complain of the opposite, that they SHOULD have upgraded them to 16 bit!

Don't you think that the snes cartridge could have had a toggle to switch between classic and updated? That would have been the best solution.

The SNES having a toggle to switch between update and non updated is a fine idea but way too expensive. The cart would've cost over $100!....also I think that playing SMB or whatever on an old NES is what most people really want, the "full" retro experiance...
you can never please everybody! Except with LASER BLAST! Obviously we ALL agree that was a great game
