Hotel Dusk first impressions

Postby ActRaiser1 » February 10th, 2007, 7:47 pm

Anyone else try this game?  It's got some serious mojo going.  If point and click adventures were this good from back in the day on the PC they'd never have gone out of fashion.  I highly recommend it.

If you're a fan of film noir you'll love it.  If you liked the old Shadowgate/Deja Vu style of games, you'll love it.  If you loved the movie Sin City, you'll love it.

Hmm, I'm only a few hours into it but am hooked.  I know the Critic will most likely frown on this type of game but it's all about the atmosphere which completely draws you in.  hmm, think of Eternal Darkness at least for that type of vibe or even better, Stephen King.  Yes, that's what this reminds me of.  A Stephen King novel or short story.

I plan on picking this game up soon....there is a lot of positive buzz on this game. Hopefully, I'll like it to. Point and click is a great fit for DS.

What is the name of NES game that is like Deja-Vu, but it's more of a horror theme. I used to love that game.

I just picked this game up yesterday, and started the introductory sequence. So far, so good. My love for these types of games is well known on this forum, and nothing is happening here to change my mind.

What I like about this as opposed to Phoenix Wright is that Hotel Dusk, being built from the ground up for the DS, looks a heck of a lot better.

It is a superb point-and-click adventure experience.  I like the first-person exploring done by seeing through the character's eyes on the top screen, while moving him around on the bottom using the stylus against a map.  It gives you a very interesting way to explore.

I thought it was pretty slick that you hold it like a book.  This game kind of reminds me of those old "Choose your own adventures" style.  If you make the wrong choice you'll end up "losing".

The only thing a little odd and it's not that bad is the characters will often repeat exactly the same thing you just said.  It's not near as distracting as one review I've read said it is but that's the only and I mean only negative to thing to say about it so far.  Well, that and the hanger puzzle but even then that wasn't that bad.  Okay, two minor, minor things.

Yeah, been playing this alot now over the weekend. Man, that dialogue really crackles. They really nail the character of what they are trying to accomplish. The characters just seem to really come alive with colorful language. Not silly "leet speak," like in some games (I won't even say it, but we all know what games do this), but real language. Bravo!

So far I disagree with some reviews that say the music is too bland. I love the jazz flavor throughout the soundtrack. The composer did a great job.
