In film, one of the most important things is good editing; all of the unnecessary parts are cut.  Likewise, this should be represented in video games more; I'd love to get into some of them, but they are just too long and expansive to play through.

 

I'm thinking one solution would be to offer the choice to play the game in "abridged" or "unabridged" mode.  I'd like to play through some Final Fantasy and other Squaresoft games without the tedious leveling up, walking around aimlessly, and random, monotonous battles.  If I could abridged versions of these, I would actually play them; I think that if Square offered an "abridged" version of these, it would open a whole new market for them.

That is some radical thinking, and really not a bad idea. It is funny with the interactive nature of games that we don't often have more control over the content.  There are definetly tedious moments in many games where they are fleshed out and made it appear longer. But why not have options from the main build of the game? Why shouldn't Zelda have a difficulty setting on it? If the goal of the game is for enjoyment, there would be no harm in catering to your audience a little better.

The combat in Zelda is pretty darn easy... almost to the point where I would want it to be more challenging. Maybe you mean the puzzles (which can be pretty dastardly).

Yeah, sorry Rob, I should have been more specific, lol. My point was that the combat is too easy to the point of being ridiculous! You can stand in front of one of those archer guys, and he'll shoot you 1/4 heart at a time, you pull out your bow and pow he is dead one shot. That would be something really easy to do, just change the value of the damage a weapon does. The cave of ordeals is fairly challenging though, so that was a nice addition. I'm probably not 100% on topic here, but that is the best example I could think of.

 

 

BTW, I had to cheat on that "hopping" puzzle to unlock the master sword. I thought that was unbelievably hard, and I lacked the patience. 10,000 points to anyone who solved that without help!

It's about time they made LINK a badass in a Zelda game. When I started playing Majora's Mask and that twerp-nerd in the beginning turned me into a Deku Nut after I just saved the world in Ocarna of Time I was like "Oh hell no" And never played the game again.

Wur - check out youtube if you want to watch all the videos from FF12.  Someone posted every single clip.  I haven't watched it yet cause it's on my list of games to play through. 

 

But yeah, I'm with you grinding away gets annoying.  I'm more into the experience of playing then wasting untold hours these days.
