There is a rumor floating around in a couple magazines that Microsoft is going to start awarding real prizes for gamerscores, etc. I think this would be awesome, even if they are simple things like the patches Atari used to give out for accomplishing a particular gaming feat.

Yeah this should be starting today for US gamers.  Great idea.

Somebody at Microsoft is really handling things well.  What a great thing to come out and do, not just talk about.

Its a decent start, but I could really care less about those rewards.  Microsoft should have made it so that you could choose between a few different things.  Like I said its a decent start, but it wouldn't drive me to go nuts with achievements.

Here's the thing.  They are giving away a massive amount of cash there.  Contra is worth a few dollars and then Fusion Frenzy 2 is a retail title.  That is a lot of money to give away given the number of people involved.  They have to limit it to particular titles because that way they can do a discount deal with the producers of those games.  If they were to offer a wide range of choices that would seriously hurt them with the finances.

I realize that they would lose out on money, but why not choose a better XBLA game than Contra (I hear the LIVE version is rubbish)?  They could also choose a better retail game than Fusion Frenzy 2.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of rewarding players for playing games, but in the future they need some better incentives.

I have to say that it bugs me that people can be so pessimistic about things like this.  Before there were NO incentives, now there is something.  Something that has not been done for years.  And it's brand new, so of course it's going to grow and develop, I don't see how people can instantly complain when, no matter how you spin it, it  is a step in the right direction.  Let's be happy that Microsoft is making a move like this, then discuss how it could be improved upon.  It bugs me to hear "This sucks cause the game that you get is not an FPS like I want".  No, what would suck is getting nothing at ALL.

I'm in complete agreement with Paul.  This rocks.

Does anyone remember the Atariage club?  I might be completely misnaming it but I seem to recall getting a monthly newsletter, sticker, and patches.  But then I was 5 at the time and things are a little hazy from back then.  Either way kudos to MS.

If I read this little blurb correctly it means that you can't register for the rewards program anymore?  Can anyone clear this up?
