I'd have to say right now is the best of times for gaming, because we have access to all the current consoles as well as any past consoles we can find on the internet.

This actually turned into a pretty good topic. And Chrisbid, I have to acknowledge that you are more correct than I was, this is more of a Gilded than a Golden Age!

The only way I can say that this is the best era is if you already lived through previous eras. After reading these posts I started thinking about kids that will grow up on Wii's, 360's and PS3's. There is no way in hell those same kids could ever appreciate something as simplistic as Berserk on the 2600. Kids that grow up today are gonna think Sonic the Hedgehog is as bad as we think Bubsy is!
Yet those of us that have lived through the golden oldies and still play games today are at a great advantage. We can get the best of today's technology and we can also appreciate the classics. I can play a game on a PS3 that blows my mind in terms of graphics and then I can play Super Mario Bros on the Virtual Console and really relish the fact that I got to grow up with those games.
Also to address the orginal topic...yea this isn't a classic gaming site. Its more of a lesson in the history of gaming . If this website were a college course it would be History of Videogames 104: 2600 to Present.
You can ask a question about any era and about any game and someone on these forums will respond to it. If you are sick about of listening about current systems, simply start some threads about older games.

Forever? So kids in the year 45,000 are going to be playing Sonic the Hedgehog?

[/QUOTE]Sure, why not? In 1992, when the first Sonic came out, who would have thought that in 15 years we'd had a high-definition Sonic with true 3D graphics, motion-picture quality cinematics, digitized sound effects, and an orchestrated musical score - and people STILL prefer the original hands down!!
We sure as hell didn't think we'd be staring at so many [expletive] loading screens!
