What to buy with my Wii?

I reccomend:
-Rechargable AA batteries (Wii-mote will eat your batteries)
-Wii Play ($50 for a Wii-mote controller and some 'tutorial' mini-games. Quite fun.)
-Extra nunchuck
-A classic controller (ignore the naysayers. This controller beats out the SNES controller. You don't have Soldier Blade (Turbographx-16) in your reviews so I would get it from the VC so you can finally review it. =)
-Component Cables (I'd stick with first party for component cables.)

You can get the first party component cables, as well as any of the above accessories, straight from Nintendo.com at the online store. If you plan to get a Wii soon, then order the component cables today. (I got mine from the online store. Worked like a charm.)

Make sure your wifi is good to go. If you don't have wi-fi, you should look into getting that ethernet adaptor.

Don't worry about getting any memory card. The Wii has one built in. But if you have any small memory cards around, used in cameras for example, then you can plug it in to the Wii to view your pictures. The SD memory card can also play MP3s instead of the usual "music" in Excite Truck.

Yeah, everybody has hit it square on the head. But I'll chime in anyway.

Here are the games I would get in the order of "goodness (with an asterisk towards those that make exceptional use of the Wii controls):"

Zelda

Madden 07*

Rayman*

Wario Ware*

Excite Truck*

Trauma Center*

Peripherals:

Definitely score some extra Wiimotes. Wii sports is much more fun with 4 players. And, of course, be sure one of those Wiimotes is the Wiiplay game/remote package. An extra nunchuk or two is fine (you'll rarely need four nunchuks... though Madden's awesome minigames uses them for four player).

Your wavebird will work great for VC games as well as GCN games, obviously.

If it is around, look for Nyko's new wireless sensor bar. Not only is it wireless, but it is much more powerful than the stock sensor bar provided by Nintendo. You'll get more range our of your controllers this way.

Also, since I haven't seen this mentioned, consider getting Nyko's Wiimote battery charger kit. I'm going through batteries like crazy!!

Still no Wii, but I did buy Zelda, Excite Truck, and Metal Slug Anthology.
I'll be at Target first thing tomorrow morning, so wish me luck!  If I have to trip a little kid or push over an old lady to get one, I'll do it!!

Good choice on Excite Truck. I have to insist that you get some kind of SD card, any size, because if you don't you will have to listen to the worst video game music of all time. I'm pretty sure Nintendo intentionally made the Excite Truck music crap just so they could sell more of their SD cards and show off the function.

You're right.  The music is pretty horrendous.  I play it with the music off, but would like to play my own music.  I'm pretty dumb when it comes to these things, so how do I do it?

The first step is to get an SD card. If you have a digital camera you can probably pull one out of that just to try it out, but you're going to want to get one just for the Wii eventually. For my computer I have a USB attachment to hook up SD cards, but it may vary for you. However you hook it up it should be pretty simple.

Just insert the SD card, and bring up the drive on your computer. If it doesn't automatically come up just find it under My Computer. Now it's just a matter of dragging the files from wherever you have them on your computer to the SD card, simple as that. If you don't have any music saved on your computer you'll have to do it one CD at a time, I guess.

One thing to note is for some reason when I copied some iTunes songs onto the SD card the Wii didn't read them. I can't remember what type they were, but I can check later if you have any trouble. I used songs from a different file and they worked great. It's all very easy, but feel free to ask if you have trouble with it.

No dice on finding a Wii.  Ran over Target as soon as it opened, but they did NOT get a new shipment this week.  As usual, the salesman looked at me like I was crazy even asking for one. I think I'm giving up on my relentless pursuit of the Wii.

Videogamecritic, have you tried Walmart or Toys R Us ? In the area in which I live, it's nearly impossible to buy one in some major retailers like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target without some luck, but I have talked with several people who have said that every week [usually Sunday], our Walmarts always get at least 10 Wiis in. You could try going there and you might get one.

Toys R Us is getting the largest allotment of Wiis than other stores in North America. Best Buy is second, I believe. They tend to do the Sunday specials.

What I would do, if I didn't have a Wii, would find a small game store or a Game Crazy and order a Wii in ahead of time. I've noticed Game Crazy will let you order in the next shipment or two of Wiis. You will have to wait a week or two but that is better running around the city.

Just think. It could be worse. You could have ended up like poor Rocko... http://rockowantsawii.ytmnd.com/
