Overrated games!

Postby VideoGameCritic » February 17th, 2007, 6:43 pm

Any thoughts on the most overrated games from the last year or so?  I'd say Okami would definitely be a candidate.  If you stripped away its fancy artistic presentation, would critics still have loved it??

I think that's a good test for what's a good video game: If it had mediocre graphics and sound, would it still be fun??  I think that's why certain old games are considered timeless.

Another game that I've been reviewing that's really overrated is Table Tennis for the 360.  Some magazine called it Sports Game of the Year, which is ludicrous.

I'd agree with Okami being really overrated. If you get rid of the visuals I don't think a single person would even consider trying to say it is better than Zelda. I also think Wii Sports is overrated. It's pretty fun, and it's a great way to introduce people to gaming, but I can't understand how some publications are calling it the best sports game of the year. It doesn't have enough depth to be the best sports game of the year, no matter how innovative it is.

Banjo Tooie - More more more of everything. This game is freaking huge and takes about 40 hours to beat, about three times longer than its prequel. But its a mess. This game is collection hell, and there is a ton of backtracking. Don't forget the framerate sucks. This game is a lousy sequel to Banjo Kazooie and doesn't deserve to have Banjo in its name. Luckily Rare got back on track with Conker, a much shorter yet more focused game.

Diablo 1- I never liked the original, way too boring, and the levels sucked. But the Sequel more than made up for it with awesome new characters with awesome moves and much better levels.

Turok 2 - The original Turok seems horrible by todays standards, but at least it has an excuse. It came out before Goldeneye, and was the best console FPS with its awesome guns and graphics. That only lasted for about 2 months though as James Bond kicked Turok's ass to the curb. But Turok 2 has no excuse. It came out over year after the awesome Goldeneye, and in the same month as Half Life. And its worse than Turok 1. The levels are ridicously large and confusing as hell. Where are the save points at? And why is the fogging still there? And why did most of the critics give this game a score of 85 percent or higher? I will never know. Luckily this series got back on track with Turok 3, which is the best game in the series.

Animal Crossing - I tried to play this game for hours, but I couldn't figure out the point to it.

I disagree. Wii sports represents a change in how sports gaming is done; it literally simulates the physical aspect of the sport in a very immersive way. There isn't a single day where I have not found Wii Tennis fun.

Wii sports might be basic, but it isn't like Wiiplay. There is some depth if you are looking for it, in terms of the challenge mode and workout mode.

The reason why some think Wii sports is sports game of the year is pure fun factor, which in sports games especially, has to trump all other characteristics.

Finally, it isn't fair to say that all Wii Sports represents is some kind of half way house for non-gamers. While it does that well, I certainly play Wii sports quite a bit, even in my third month of Wii ownership.

Well, personally I thought Wii Sports was fun, but didn't have nearly as much depth as say Madden '07 (Wii version). I think it's great that it introduces non-gamers to gaming, but I myself haven't gone back to it that much. I suppose that may be due to the fact that I had Zelda at the same try, so I'll give it another go.

This seems an obvious and pointless point to try and make.  It's like saying, I thought Ren and Stimpy was a funny show, but didn't have nearly the depth and character development of Scrubs or The Office.

Fair enough Paul. Like I said, I had fun with it, and I wasn't disappointed with it as a pack in game. But given that you agree that it doesn't have as much depth as other sports games, can't you see how I would think it shouldn't be the winner of sports game of the year? It was fun, and it's great for introducing people to games, but it wasn't better than Madden '07. Most innovative game of the year? Sure, but not best sports game.

Okami, which recieved game of the year honors and excellent ratings, proves to me again that someone has someone's hand in their pocket. I was very disappointed with this game and can't understand why it recieved such glowing reviews.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas would be another one. The graphics and gameplay are both atrocious. Yes, there is alot of fun to be had driving and stealing cars, and exploring the big map, but overall many of the game's features suck: pool, basketball, the story mode, etc.

I didn't like San Andreas, either. I loved Vice City but I just couldn't get into San Andreas. Who told Rockstar people wanted RPG/sim-like elements anyway? I really don't feel like going to the gym in a video game; it's already a chore in real life but at least then there's some actual payoff.

The entire GTA series tend to get really old really fast. Once you've driven around a bit and seen what there is to see, you'll pretty much spend the rest of the game doing endless fetch quests that never change. Can't understand what people see in them.
