The first reviews for Sonic and the Secret Rings are trickling in and they are.... encouraging (check metacritic.com).
Could it a be? A new console Sonic that's good?

The fact that your apparently stuck countinuosly moving in the game and have to jump/dodge oncoming obstacles really makes this a "try before buy" situation. Gameplay like that can be hugely frustrating at times (Battletoads or Space Harrier). I was actually expecting (hoping) that the game would play like the original Crash Bandicoot on the ps1 but with the speed of the old sonic games.
Well I just finished reading the reviews for Sonic on both Gamespot and IGN. On IGN the reviewer stated that Sonic and the Secret Rings is the best 3D Sonic ever made. The first page of the review is pretty much joyous praise. Then the second page he complains about the camera and finnicky control. In the end he gave it a 6.9.
I am going to pick this game up after work I and I will post my intial impressions. I have been wanting another robust single player game I can sink my teeth into on the Wii and this looks like it could fit the bill.
Overall the reviews seem to be favorable and if Sega sticks to formula and perhaps makes some adjustments we could have the Blue Blur back on top.
Yeah, I thought Matt C's IGN review was a little weird. You would have supposed the game would have scored in the 7's or even 8's just by reading his article.
But, I got the impression that he really didn't like ANY 3D Sonics at all, including the better ones that people generally like. So, I guess if you did like the Dreamcast Sonic, you can add a half point of so to the review.
I'm looking forward to your take, JLH.

I realize that its still early but on Gamespot the User rating of Secret Rings is at 9.0. When there is that big of a difference in the score I tend to think that reviewers were nitpicking. Also it could just be the Sonic faithful boosting the user score. I am curious to see where the user rating is about a month from now.
I also read a user review in which the person gave the game an 8.8. I normally look into those things too much, but it said that 20 other users agreed with the review. I never seem more than 5 or 6 people agree with user posted reviews on that site.
I'm willing to bet that if you can handle the camera flaws and get used to the contorls the game is rock solid.
I think the Sonic faithful are probably boosting the score. I thought Sonic Adventure was great when it came out, but after playing it again I can see how mediocre it really was. The screwed up camera and awful bugs were enough to make me want to pull my hair out at times. It definitely had its high points, but it isn't the great game that a lot of people make it out to be.
I can't imagine this one has too many problems if it's just on tracks, but the reversing issue the ign reviewer mentioned did sound annoying. I wouldn't expect anything but bad music from a Sonic game at this point, and the multiplayer sounds just as awful as I thought it would be. So I guess what I'm saying is that it's exactly what I thought it would be, but as long as the core gameplay is fun I'm happy. It seemed like the main problem with the 360 Sonic was that it just wasn't fun.
