Strangest Video Game Names

Postby VideoGameCritic » November 25th, 2021, 11:00 am

Just reviewed Earth Dies Screaming (2600) and it occurred to me it might be fun to compile a list of the strangest video game names. Here's my first list. Can you think of any more candidates?

Earth Dies Screaming
Communist Mutants from Space
Quest for the Shaven Yak Starring Ren and Stimle
Zombie ate my neighbors
Spanky's Quest
Shaq Fu
Voltage fighting Gowcaizer
Zippy Race
2010: The Graphic Action Game
Astyanax nes
Irritating Stick
Justice League Task FOrce
Tube Slider
Name this game
Lightening force
Plumbers don't wear ties
Veigues Tactical Gladiator

We've been down this path a couple times:

And that thread has a link to a previous thread!

Lots of great suggestions across these discussions!

I like "Tanks but no tanks" that I found on this website some 10 years ago.

Um Jammer Lammy

I get they were trying to replicate the same kinda cadence the name Parapper the Rapper had, but it just doesn’t work as a game title for me. I think it may have become more well-known with a different name - it’s not as obvious what the hell the game is supposed to be just by title alone.

No One Can Stop Mr. Domino! That one always sticks with me. I always thought Seaman was a bit strange, too. Always got funny looks from my friends whenever I brought that one up...

I feel like so many Japanese games these days have excessively-long titles, like it’s some sort of trend to add as many extraneous words as possible. This is particularly true of Japanese RPGs.

I saw a game on the Switch eShop the other day whose full title was (checks notes) The Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel IV - The End of Saga. And there’s worse ones out there than that.

I guess Japanese games have always had some sort of nonsense gibberish in the titles, though. As much as I like Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer, I have no idea what a “Busterhawk” is, or why “Grey” was mis-translated to “Gley” instead - and never corrected for any of the re-releases

- VVVVVV (pretty good retro platformer, 2010)
- X (1992 game for Game Boy, sort of Star Fox for Game Boy)
- Z (1996 Sega Saturn/PC RTS game)
