As soon as I think I'm nailing down a favorite genre, I change my mind completely.

 

I was getting to think that strategy games where what I enjoyed the most: Ogre Battle 64, Battalion Wars, Archon, Final Fantasy: Tactics, Sim City 3000...

 

but I just played the heralded Command and Conquer and I think it sucks. I found Starcraft 64 for 10 bucks (It's a rare game) and I don't know if its worth a garb or not. I read a Gamespot review where it said it suffered from slow down. I think that would kill the expereince and they also said it was similiar to Command and Conquer.

 

Anybody own Starcraft 64? Can I get a recommendation or a nay?

Is it just a loose cart, or is it the whole package?  If its a complete package I would buy it because the resale value would be more than $10. 

As for the game itself I can only comment on the PC version.  It was an incredibly hard game and even though I loved the theme and style I just couldn't enjoy it.  Maybe the 64 version is a little easier.  If you do end up getting it let me know because that version  has been on my radar for a long time.  Thanks man.

Also since you seem to like strategy games I would like to point you in the direction of a few you might like. 

Nintendo DS - Advance Wars (you've probably already have this one)

Gamecube - Fire Emblem, Gladius

Playstation 2 - Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Makai Kingdom and Phantom Brave.

Great snag of starcraft 64 at 10 bucks. That usually sells over $50 dollars. The n64 port is decent compared to its big brother version on the pc and mac. Recommend the pc version for regular play. Don't even bother playing multiplayer on the n64. Try managing your fleet with half a screen and low frame-rates in battle. Single player from what I remember played pretty well on the n64 when I rented it back in the day.

Definitly give the Fire Emblem series a try. 9 excellent games so far, with the tenth headed for the Wii. While only the 3 most recent games are available in english, the japanese games are fairly easy to play if you've played a later game in the series, just print out a guide on how to recruit characters, and you'll be fine. Hopefully we'll see some of these games in english on the Virtual Console as well.

You do realise C&C is twelve years old now.  I assume you played it on the PC here in which case just get Starcraft for the PC rather than a limited port with a rubbish control method.  Starcraft isn't that great anyway, even on the PC it has clunky controls and a limited interface.  I noticed most of the games you quoted as liking there are more aptly named strategy light titles.  Anyway the best strategy games of recent years:

-Total Annihilation.  These game defines the term deep.  It has so many tactical options with everything balanced out nicely.  The multiplayer is a true challenge.  No other strategy title has come close to this in terms of pure brilliance and design.  Although my PC won't run Supreme Commander which is made by the same guys.

-Rise of Nations.  Plays completely differently to all other strat.  Very original concept where there is a big importance on town populations affecting your territory.

-Perimeter.  Criminally overlooked title that has a wealth of new ideas in it that require balance and timing.  Just like TA it is impossible to turtle in this one which is only a good thing.

-Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun.  Not as good as the others but the diverse units create for a number of great tactical options.

Oh yeah, I love Fire Emblem: POR. That was a great game. I think its kinda weird/ good that the Wii's new version is not using the wand.

 

So Gladius is worth a poo? Never heard of it

I second the mention of Rise of Nations and Advance Wars.  Though if you find StarCraft on the PC grab that instead.  The control with a mouse will naturally be better.  It was incredibly addicting and difficult.  It took me about a year to make it through the entire game while I was in college, mostly just playing on the weekends.  There's lots of trial and error but the voiceovers/acting was incredible at the time with a fantastic ending that really made you want for a proper sequel.
