Mixed Reviews for Wii games

I have had a Wii since launch and recently I have noticed a trend.  It is really hard to get an accurate review of Wii games.  The reviews are all over the place.  Some reviews say Metal Slug is an unplayable pile of crap...I own it and think its fantastic.  How could they say the controls don't work...I have played it and they obviously work fine to me...

Alot of complaints come right directly from the Wii controls.  I have read in numerous reviews of times where actions don't register and simply don't work.  In every game that I have played, this never happens.  I am beginning to think that some of these people are too uncoordinated to play the Wii.  If you are a clusmy dope, you are going to struggle with motion controls...

The latest offender seems to be SSX Blur.  Every time I read a bad review they cite that the Ubertrick controls don't work properly.  Then in good reviews I read that the game is simply hard and the tricks work, but are hard to pull off...which is it?  See I tend to fault the player and not the game and if that's the case SSX goes from being average to outstanding.

Regardless, this makes buying games for the Wii sort of a hard process.  Its almost better to ask people on a message board than listen to some of these reviews.  Do you think you have to be more coordinated to enjoy the Wii?  Has anyone played SSX Blur to add any comments?

Why do you guys think the Wii reviews are all over the place?

I disagree, the Wii controls for Metal Slug suck.   They suck bad.   They are awful   The motion controls never work.     But none of that matters.  They included the ability to play with the gamecube controller.  I think it works really well.   The emulation is also fantastic, and they even brought back the slowdown from Metal Slug 2.   Basically this collection is 6 and 1/4 awesome games for 40 bucks. Imagine all the money you would spend trying to get the earlier games in this series on other systems.   Also they added the ability to have limited or unlimited continues, and you can only unlock stuff by playing it limited.  That is an excellent choice, and I appreciate the fact that they included 3 difficulty levels.  Sure, the Wii controls suck, but it doesnt matter because you dont have to use them.   If this collection forced you to use them, then I would trash this game.   But as it is, this collection is nothing short of excellent and anyone who gave it score lower than 8.5/10 deserves to be fired.

See this is what I'm talking about.  Its a perfect example of everything I've been saying.  I have played through several of the Metal Slug games (with limited continues) with the standard NES style controls.  This works perfectly for me.  One button jumps, the other shoots and to toss a grenade I gently tap the Wiimote against my left hand.  It works flawlessly.  I am actually better at Metal Slug 3 on the Wii than I am on the the Xbox.

I cannot comment on the other controlling styles, but the standard Wiimote on its side is certainly not broken and it works just fine in my book.

Yet I agree with Edward M in that its a non-issue because you can play with the gamecube contorller if you so desire.  Classic controller support would have been nice too, but Nintendo didn't allow it.

Anywho I still recommend Metal Slug to anyone who has never played the series before.  Its a great collection and for once they don't give you unlimited continues (pointless in an arcade game).  There is room for improvement, but I have little to complain about.

Well right now I don't think there is a definitive source.  Some places rate them too high or low and others are just all over the place.  You could try a site like metacritic.com that tabulates all reviews...but here is what I found works best.

Go to gamespot.  Search for the game you want and click on the summary tab.  In the middle of page on the right hand side you will see the game's Vital Stats.  There are 3 numbers in here...2 of which you should notice.  First there is the We Say (gamespot score) and then there is the You Say (gamer's rating).  What I tend to do is take the two numbers and find the median.  For example Metal Slug Anthology was rated 7.5 (We Say).  gamers rated the game with an (8.6)  I take both numbers and say that the final score is around an 8.1 (or a B- in Critic terms).  I use this along with user feedback from people in formus.  Because I personal feel Metal Slug Anthology is a solid B to B+ game.

It doesn't always work and you will always find anomalies, but I find it to be helpful.

I know some people here hate ign, but the Wii scores are the best I've seen so far. They didn't overrate Zelda or Sonic, they gave Elebits the credit it deserved, and they gave Wii Sports a fair review as well (6.5 I believe). I don't agree with all of their scores, but they seem to be more levelheaded than some other sites.

Yeah that is probably the best setup out of the wii setups.  But like other games, I have problem doing motions. For example Call of Duty 3 made me want to throw it out a window with all its stupid scrpted do a wii motion parts.  the grenade toss just never seems to work right for me, and Metal Slug is a game that requires extremely quick reflexes.  They should have made it so you can use the B button. (the trigger on the bottom why is it called B and not Z?)  That would work much better for me, as I have no problem pressing that button while holding it in the NES position, but thats why I use the GC controller.
