Rumble is not the most important thing in the world, but it could lead to problems with multiplatform game sales. Allow me to explain. Im a gaming fanatic like most people here. I already own the 360 and wii. And I will be picking up the PS3 whenever the good games come out like MGS4 and Devil May Cry 4. So basically, I will own all 3 systems.
My deal is, that even though rumble might seem like a minor deal, it will probably be the deciding factor in me choosing the 360 version over the PS3 version of game. That and the awesome gamerscore program. It could be for many people also.

Agreed, when it comes to multiplatform games, I'm going with the 360 version just for those darn achievements.
Seriously, though, how on earth does anyone play a FPS without rumble. There's a huge difference in play with it turned off. With it on you know immediately you're getting shot at. Sure the work arounds are to bleed out the edges of the screen but you lose visibility by doing that. To me that's a huge deal. In all other genres it doesn't make that much of a differnce but when you're getting shot in the back and don't know it, you're dead vs with the feedback on you can take cover immediately and toss a grenade to buy some time.
