Favorite behind the scenes video game facts?

My favorite is that when Capcom was making the upgraded Resident Evil: Director's Cut on PS1, they wanted some new songs for the soundtrack to go along with it. The composer (who was pretending to be deaf, but that's another story) accidentally set one of the songs to be played by the wrong instrument on his synthesizer, then submitted it without realizing his mistake.

And that's how we got this masterpiece: https://youtu.be/iJYvCHm3Ov4

And what an incredible story that is! Highly recommended reading. In short: don't lie about having a disability, and don't expect someone else to do your work for you, uncredited. Sooner or later, the truth will come out.

As for me, I loved finding out that GoldenEye was developed by a core team of about 12 people - and for most of them, it was their first game. They also managed to save cartridge memory by rendering many of the textures in the game in monochrome. Explains why much of the game seems to be awash in grays, greens, and browns, but also manages to give the game a very realistic look overall.

Bonus points for the fact that the multiplayer mode was a "last minute" addition, and completed in about two weeks before the game went gold. Oh, the impact those two weeks had on my life is nearly immeasurable!

Mortal Kombat.. while I always knew the characters were based on real actors, I didn’t really understand the technology until recently, when one of the MK actors explained it to me. I thought the actors did some form of motion capture. In reality, each of their moves is a video. For example, they would video the actor punching, and then digitize that video into the game as his punch animation. In some ways, a MK fight is just a string of video clips being played out based on what buttons you press.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but it blew me away that I went 25+ years without knowing it.

He didn't even compose either. His works were ghostwritten by Takashi Niigaki.
