Show some love for the 32X?

Strange. Everytime I go to my used game store I ponder buying one of the few copies they have of chaotix but keep avoiding it based on your review alone. Now that you talk of its intrigue I may have to pick it up.

The 32x version of NIGHT TRAP and FARENHEIGHT are improvements but then again I am a sucker for FMV. (commence the stone throwing). Tempo is fun and I honestly like ZAXXON!! Being a HUGE sega fan even I can admit the 32x was a mess, but it seems that now that u can pick it up for a few pesos at a local swap meet, the 32x is experiencing more glory than in 1995.

Now having read your rant on the intriguing disaster that is CHAOTIX I went out and grabbed a copy. Now it is one of the more expensive 32x games (i paid almost 30 bux) but being a collector thats not bad. However I have already taken it back twice to get a different copy because they all seem to be defective. The game freezes up on me as I begin. I spoke to the guy at the store and he told me his friend had a problem running chaotix on his 32x as well and that he heard of some models not being able to run it. I have 2 different 32x consoles and tried both of them, only to have the game freeze up the same way. Has anyone else heard of this problem? As far as I'm conserned this game gets an F until I can actually play the thing. If ever. And yes my hardware works fine with every other 32x game I have (almost a dozen) so that isnt the problem.

What I've never understood (in retrospect) is why Sega needed a "stop gap" while their full fledged 32-bit system was developed. Sega was first in the 16-bit generation, and the Genesis could be considered to be "aging" by 1991 when Nintendo finally launched their 16-bit console. I guess what I'm saying is why wasn't Sega more on the ball on "leading the way" for the (then) next gen?

First, Gentlegamer, I think it's now obvious Sega was having trouble with the saturn at first-it was a B*tch to program for and they wanted to work the kinks out before releasing it.

But also, The Genesis was Segas most successful system ever, and they milked it for all it was worth. On paper the 32X looked good. For the many gamers who already HAD a Gennny and Cd-rom drive, WHY buy a new 32 bit system for $3-400, when, for $150, you could turn what you had into a "real arcade machine"? With the CDRom, you potentially could have games equal to Saturn and PSX- IF the 32X was really that powerful, which, in hindsight, I wonder. Personally I think the "32"X is as suspect as the "64" bit Jaguar. All the 32X games I've seen (exceptions; Virtua Fighter and Racing and Star Wars) look like SNES 16 bit-in other words, it was more a 16 bit upgrade than true blue 32!

[/QUOTE]I remember reading that Sega was orginally working on a 2D uber-system that would be like a cheaper, cd-based Neo Geo.  Then whenever Virtua Fighter was getting big for them, and FPS was getting big on the PC, they started realizing that their new console needed to be able to render 3D well to succeed.  They thought their current arcade board for 3D games (used in Virtua Fighter, etc.) wasn't powerful enough, so they had to start from the ground up on a new chip.  I think that was the big delay.

R.J. is essentially correct; I've been re-reading my past issues of next generation magazine. When that mag started the Sony Playstation and Saturn and 32X had all just been announced.

What amazes me is how many people defended the 32X even though they KNEW Sega would HAVE to bring Saturn to the U.S. soon or be buried by Sony. It comes down to what I said in another forum IMPATIENCE! "I want 32 bit NOWNOWNOWNOW!".... so even though 32X is reported as being underpowered, wonderment of how Sega can support so many systems (they saw the crash of Sega coming long ahead!), and bad reviews of most launch 32X games (excepting Star Wars), STILL people said how awesome it was they ould have 32 bit now, oh it was so cool, fantastic...then these SAME people moaned and grumbled when Saturn came out, effectively killing 32X. Gee who could have known?

I still cant see how BOTH of my 32x's will not run chaotix. Even after trying the elusive "white wire" replacement and toggle inside, still a no go. Every other game I have runs perfect. Just NO love for knuckles or his chaotix friends. BOO!!!! Im mad at Sega all over again.
