I think Super Mario Bros. 3 was an outstanding game, Link to the Past was amazing, and Pong, the one that started it all. Those are probably my top games. Honorable mentions are Super Mario Bros, Ocarina of Time, and Tetris.

Best would be super mario bros
Runner-up: Super Mario 64. Never was a transformation from 2-d to 3-d done so flawlessly. Is such an enjoyable game that rarely frustrates.

I sometimes give answers that enrage folks, but here goes.....
In no particular order (I'm too lazy tonight to handle THAT problem), and keep in mind that I WILL miss some really important games:
Knights of the Old Republic. Never before has an American RPG so fully immersed me in an alternate world. Possibly one of the best voiced games of all time, also. Incredible dialog, morality choices, and deep RPG gameplay without being tedious.
The Legend of Zelda, original. I can go on and on here, but I won't for now (-:
Xcom: UFO Defense (Microprose, PC) Had to throw in an oddball PC game. Tactics gameplay at its finest, with all kinds of cool extra features, like interrogating aliens to steal their technology!
Final Fantasy VII: Yes, it seems a little dated now, and there are twenty gazillion FF iterations. But this was a zeitgeist game that changed the industry. (Spoiler alert, if you haven't played this) Aerith's death was one of the all time great moments of story based gaming.
Doom. Hard to leave this one out. Pretty obvious. However, allow me to segue right to....
Halo. Took so many elements of different types of FPS games, gave it a great console control scheme, and you have yourself an FPS to rise above all others in its day. Few combine furious gameplay, interesting narrative (cliched, sure, but they are fun cliches) and amazing multiplayer like this title does.
Contra, the NES version. One of the great side scrolling shooters of all time.
Sonic the Hedgehog. Another obvious one, but SEGA was one of the very few companies to take Mario style gameplay and do something truly unique and interesting. Was sort of like Diane Sawyer to Mario's Katie Couric.
Zelda: Twilight Princess. You guys know what I think of this one. I actually think it gets slightly underrated, due to what I call "super high expectations from a proven franchise plus fanboy annoyance disease." A magical, amazing gameplay experience. The reason I even bother playing games.
Super Mario World: I'll go ahead and throw a bone to this oft-overlooked SNES pack in classic. Could have gone with any of the 2D Marios, even New Super Mario Bros.
Street Fighter II. Not many games have such balanced gameplay and fine tuned controls, that competitive tournaments run regularly well over a decade after it hit the arcades. The last great arcade experience before arcades died in the US.
Ugh, I could go on, but I'll stop here!

Star Wars: KOTOR one of the greatest games ever? Gee whiz... that's nuts
Adventure- 2600
Street Fighter 2- Arcade
Super Mario Brothers- NES
Galaga- Arcade
Ms. Pac Man- Arcade
It's funny, I think we live in a day and age where most games are normally pretty good. There was a time when you had to be careful when purchasing games, because most of titles released were absolute unplayabe crap. Now, the overall quality of all games have improved (Except for camera issues), but there seems like there are few games that will ever reach legendary status. Halo, Twilight Princess, God of War 2, Super Smash Brothers, Resident Evil 4, Gears of War, Ninja Gaiden Black, Virtual Fighter 5, the Burnout series, Mario Kart, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance Fall of Man... these are all awesome games, but for some reason they all tend to blend together over time. The games I listed above, however... seem to stick out in people's mind and they are still playable today. In ten years they will be prefered over the list mentioned in the paragraph

Like I said, I treasure different things in games than some people. KOTOR is one of my oddball choices.

Adventures of Lolo better than Tetris/ Rampart/ Columns/ Klax? Ice Hockey better on the 2600 than the NES? You hurt my soul.
Myst wins an award? Poo on you, sir.
