PS3>Wii?
Same here, we only have one Wal*Mart to get game stuff from in this one horse town (sadly W*M drove out the book, toy and video stores!) ... anyway, I've been there several times past few months. They have 6 PS3's sitting out front collecting dust and while they have some Wii GAMES, not a SINGLE Wii unit have I seen! I think Sony made a mistook somewhere here..

Of course he would, because there is not a shred of reason for anyone to make a statement like that. I guess I am confused at how this related to the topic at hand.

It is related to the topic because the topic creator (incorrectly) thought the Critic was deliberately choosing a PS3 over Wii.
You have no idea how much hatred there is at the Wii from certain 'hardcore' players (and certain developers relying on graphical upgrades as a crutch for lack of talent). These 'hardcore' gamers believe games like Wii Sports will destroy gaming as we know it. These are the same ones that wouldn't stop mocking the Wii controller when it was unveiled.

I would tell the "hardcore" (*sigh*) people to relax a bit. There has been plenty of room in the market in since about 1995 for multiple consoles to succesfully cater to certain demographics.

I am not hardcore 2-D , as I play 3-D games as well (Mario64DS, TOCA3 Race driver), but my beef is this: WHY is it, in the 2-D 16 -32 bit era you could ALSO buy 3-D games (Doom, Myst, Duke Nukem 3D) but in the last and THIS era, you can buy 3-D games but are going to be hard pressed to find 2-D on anything but compilations or download games?
I don't think they should stop making Gears of war or Halo, since obviously people like them, but can't other manufacturers besides Nintendo make some good, NEW, 2-D platformers for the consoles?
My only hope is now that Xbox and PS2 are "old news", maybe they will make budget 2-D games for them!

To the narrow-minded people running many game publishers, 2D represents antiquated technology. Heck, Sony didn't want ANY 2D games on its original Playstation, and I don't think their mindset has changed much. Everybody wants their games to be "cutting edge". I suspect EA would much prefer to release good-looking but dull Grand Theft Auto clone over a simple but fun 2D title.
With the recent popularity of Wii and old 2D games however, hopefully publishers will wake up and realize that not all games need to be 3D and take 50 hours to complete. I'd really like to see some arcade sensibility return to the world of consoles, and I think we might be starting to see it now.

Hate you burst your bubble, but there is no 2D gaming revolution. Never will be.

QFT! Publishers know how to make games but they really don't know their markets. They rely so heavily on stereotypes in many direction of their games (for Nintendo, make it 'kiddie'. For Xbox, make it 'frat boy'. For Playstation, make it 'la mature').
I think the biggest problem with 2d gaming is that it has been defined as 'handheld gaming' while everything 3d is considered 'console gaming'. I've programmed some games (long long ago) but one thing I know for sure is that making a 2d game is MUCH easier and cheaper than making a 3d game (especially a 3d game with collisions).
Mark Rein of Epic has complained that new PC buyers go for the cheap machines (the ones without the huge 3d video cards). The solution ought to be simple. Make some 2d games and reach all of the PC computer installed base. Why won't PC game companies do this? Rollercoaster Tycoon and the Sims did extremely well starting with 2d. Perhaps the problem with PC gaming is that companies are chasing after the high end user and ignoring the huge mass of casual gamers (who are stuck with flash games since no company wants to make games for them).
Nintendo is also guilty of this. Super Mario Brothers 3 is the best selling game ever. But for fifteen years, Nintendo didn't make a new 2d Super Mario Brothers as they became enchanted with 3d technology. They make a handheld New Super Mario Brothers and it won't stop selling (NSMB has outsold all other Mario games in Japan except for the original which it is fast gaining). Nintendo shouldn't stop making 3d versions of its franchises, it should also make 2d versions as well. Who wouldn't want to play a new 2d Super Mario Brothers, new 2d Metroid, or a new 2d Zelda?
One ray of hope has been the Virtual Console high sales. This is causing a brand revival with many games (Bonk will be coming back) and should show a demand for 2d gaming.

I actually agree with you Varian, It is hard to find a person my age who did not like SM3, wether they play games anymore or not. There are many, many people who just don't "get" or enjoy 3-d games and they never will. And hardly anyone is focusing on them. Nintendo should definetly make an effort to get back to their 2-d roots, especialy if they can sell it over the internet and cut out the middleman and manufacturing costs.
Imagine an "8-bit" version (at least in looks) of Super Smash Bros. on the VC. That game would sell tons just on the novelty factor alone.
