SOR Vs. Final Fight & Emulators

Postby Alienblue » March 13th, 2007, 1:43 pm

Streets of Rage has always been one of my favorite Genesis games. I know FINAL FIGHT came first, but the Nintendo Final Fight always seemed too slow to me, even though the graphics are bigger and Haggar is AWESOME. Well, I just loaded FF , the coin-op version, into MAME (more on that in a second) and I have to say, Streets Of Rage DESTROYS FF. It has Better music, more diverse characters (I like playing the FEMALE, BLAZE), more varied locations and better control. Only the color and sprite size of Final Fight outdoes SOR. Anyone agree? Disagree?

While you're here, I was also wondering how y'all felt about using emulators like MAME? Myself, I only load ROMS if A) I already own the game in some form (I have SNES FF) or B) there are NO other versions available that I can buy. If this is the ONLY way I can play it, why not? How do others feel?

Yeah Streets was definitely more varied especially the sequels. I do believe it was built for the Genesis... there was no coin-op version I believe. So it's no surprise that it just whoops the SNES FF out right.

Hmm, surprised your bringing up the emulator topic again. I'd be careful... the last time we all had this conversation it got pretty nasty if I remember correctly.

To comment on it though there really seems to be one gray where people really disagree on. Most people are in agreement that if there is a readily available copy and you're just too lazy to go out and purchase it then it's wrong. For instance playing Super Mario Bros. on an emulator when there are multiple ways to own a cheap legal version of the game. Obviously most people think this is wrong.

I find the gray area comes in with games that are not readily available, whether they are extremely rare, super expensive or just never released. This is where some people say that stealing is wrong no matter what and others feel they aren't really stealing from anyone because no one is making it available.

Personally I don't mind it... I think it's ok because it can generate interest in a game and thusly lead to an official release of the game... which in the long run helps said company that owns the property. It is a form of 'viral' marketing in a very loose sense. If game companies took advantage of this they could really clean up by selling their older games. I realize they are starting to with Xbox live and the Virtual Console... lets hope they keep this up.

I also think it is ok as a form of a rental service. Try it out on an emulator.. you like it.. you buy it. Afterwards delete it from your computer.

Everyone should understand that no matter how you feel about it is still against the law. I know why the law is there. I'm sure it is pretty obvious. I for one would like to see this law changed/amended slightly. Hopefully to loosen them so that more people could try out games that they would never have otherwise.

Sorry Alienblue, but the "legality of emulation" debate has been done to death (yawn), both here and elsewhere. And why do you feel the need to justify to us why you think it was OK to play FF in Mame because you own the SNES version? Who cares? I certainly don't. Or to put it a nicer way, can't we just discuss the GAME itself, and whichever version you happen to be playing?

As for SOR vs FF, FF has superior graphics, but SOR pulls ahead in gameplay and (especially) music. I like both games, but overall I prefer SOR. My favorite way to play SOR is to start a two player game, and kill off one of them (I usually kill player 1, because player 2's "police assist" move is much cooler in my opinion). The neat thing is, even with one of the players gone, the game continues to behave as if there were two players. This means double the enemies, including bosses, making the game much more intense. It also means double the food, weapons, and 1ups, which certainly helps.

I think we had this debate before.  Pretty much it devolved into m0zart and I bashing each other over intellectual property rights.  Only Crevelle and Shawn backed up m0zart with everyone else on the side going with the sure, I'll emulate if it's not available or in the secondardy market only.  There were a few that said they'd emulate no matter what because they're cheap bastards.  (I just can't stand to play games on my pc anymore so I'm out not for ethical reasons just for playability reasons).  Lastly, Duke sucks.

"Isn't Final Fight on one of the Capcom Compilation discs?"

Yes, but it's also available as an SNES cart-which is what I own.

I am VERY sorry I brought up "the emulation issue" again guys, my memory is getting worse and I forgot it had been done. Forget I asked, okay? Just tell me what you think of Streets of Rage vs. Final Fight. Vs. The Simpsons arcade game. Vs. INTV Boxing.

Streets of Rage started in the arcades in 1989 before coming to the Genesis.
