A Metroid Delay

I just read that MP3 may be delayed into early '08. In the past, this sort of announcement would really tick me off but not this time. After playing through The Twilight Princess and remembering how many times that game was delayed, it dawned on me that delays are usually a good thing for reputable companies. I knew, when Namco kept delaying Soul Caliber 2, that it would be good(just look at the first one!). Also, even though I no longer play Final Fantasy, I knew Final Fantasy XII would be worth the wait, seeing as how much time Square spent on it. However, I knew Driv3r would absolutely suck(I don't know why, I just knew).

Nintendo(along with Square, Capcom, Konami, etc.) always seems to have a reason behind their delays. I don't think they are very intelligent as to how they lay out their releases but their delays are usually worth the time. Also, if I recall, Metroid Prime 2 came out right on schedule and was pretty drab, compared to the first. I do wish they would wise up and plan ahead, put out a few games that would pad their list so they could tweak their bigger games in the process. The way that I see it, when you have Twilight Princess in November, Wario Ware and Sonic(if you want to call that a big game!) in Feb, Super Paper Mario in April, months of nothing, and then the holiday season, there's a ton of empty space there that Sony and Microsoft are taking advantage of, releasing games the way that a company should. Get on the ball, Nintendo!

Finally, I want this to be a friendly debate. I don't want certain people to use this topic as an excuse to flame and openly criticize. I'm just wondering what everybody's take on the subject is. If you disagree, fine, just don't be rude to one another.

Two things...

One...I would prefer a company delay a game to deliver a good product...I mean there have been a ton of games that I liked that were oh so close to being great (Killzone for the PS2 comes to mind)...however...

I would be very disappointed if I was a Wii owner simply b/c there aren't many top tier games coming out for the system this year. God forbid if Mario Galaxy gets delayed.

This is the one game I was thinking may push me over the top to buy a Wii. Guess I'll be saving $250!

The MP3 delay is fine with me. There are a lot of other Nintendo Wii games this year that could clearly clear the void (SMBB and SMG come to mind). As long as MP3 doesn't end up like Superman 64 (god forbid), i see no problem in polishing an already excellent game.

I have mixed feelings, but they are heavily on the side of being ok with this.  As Miyamoto-San said: "A delayed game is eventually good; a bad game is bad forever."

It is especially important to me that Zelda and Metroid, my two favorite game series, remain consistently good, even if I have to wait up to five years between installments.

Have you ever played Superman 64. It's actually not that bad. It is glitchy that's its biggest problem.

If it is delayed, (has not been conformed, correct?), they must be either adding a ton of online multiplayer or are trying to balance out the launch of their big titles. I am sure that even prior to Wii launch that this game was supposedly "done" or very near done. Supposedly this game is going to be a landmark title in terms of what you can do with the wimote in a fps shooter game, so it is an important game, even if it is not Galaxy or Smash Bros.

I would disagree about the "no landmark titles" for Wii in 2007.

For one, Super Paper Mario is going to freakin' blow you guys away. I played it at the Game Developer's Conference last week. It isn't an RPG anymore, it's a straight platformer, and it rocks. Hard. And that game comes out very soon.

Between SPM, Brawl, and Galaxy (check the vids from the conference, it looks other phenomenal), I think we have quite a bit to look forward too.

But to the original topic, yeah, I don't mind delays if the game is going to be a big, epic experience. Get it right.

Now, just don't make it ridiculous, like Duke Nukem Forever....

I just thought there would be more original IP's to get excited about. The Wii line-up still seems light but maybe that is just me. If you love sequels and get all fired about that then I guess you are in video game bliss with the Wii. Not to mention the PS2 and PSP Ports. HMMM...looking at the 360 I am not sure there is much more originality coming out this year but maybe I am wrong. Maybe we are all just in video game retread and sequel HELL!!!!!!

Thank you for posting your criticism in a sound-minded manner Shawn. I can actually see your point when I don't feel like you're yelling it at me. You're right that there really aren't any original IPs coming from Nintendo this year, but I think it's a good business strategy.

Personally, I'm going to have a blast playing Mario Galaxies, and Smash Bros. Brawl, and I think most people will. It makes sense for Nintendo to release these sequels first-early games like Zelda Metroid and Mario will get a whole lot of people to buy the system off the bat-then release original IPs once the system has been established and is in a lot of households. I imagine that in 2008 we'll see quite a few new franchises come from Nintendo, and I bet Pikmin, a relatively new franchise, will get a sequel as well. I might be wrong, but I think if Nintendo is releasing all of their big franchise games in the first year then they must have some amazing stuff lined up for later.

I hope Metroid is being pushed back to develop online play. Online play is a must this time around for Nintendo
