I GOT AN XBOX!!!!

Postby Alienblue » March 14th, 2007, 3:04 pm

Yeh, the Alien in Blue is really moving up! You'll recall I recently got a PS2, well, today I scored a second hand Xbox!

It is in perfect condition and came with two games....Desert Storm and Medal Of Honor: Frontline. Although I am not crazy about FPS's , comparing the Xbox to the PS2 I must admit- The graphics/ voices are MUCH better, the controls are FANTASTIC-I love that controller!- and thank heavens you can actually TURN IT OFF instead of leaving it on standby like the PS2.

Most amazing, with a 2-DS/1 PSX game trade in, the final cost for the system, controller and 2 games was- TWENTY ONE BUCKS!!!!

Okay, everyone! What do you think of those 2 games and what other Xbox games do you reccomend? I'm mostly looking for compilations, and puzzle or 2-D type games, but also REALLY GOOD 3-D ones like Shadow Of the Collosus and Katmari! I'm stoked I now have two current gen systems to choose software for (next: Gamecube!). (Note: I do not like baseball/football/soccer , strategy or long RPG /adventure games.) Okay..1-2-3-SUGGEST!!!!

Hey good to hear, the title for the XBox are a very good price these days.

Personally I would recommend:

-Jet Set Radio Future.  It's a beautiful, cell shaded free roaming rollerblade game.  It's so much smoother than the original on Dreamcast and is one of my favourite games of all time.

-The Thing.  Do you like the movie?  If so this game is great, PS2 as well though.

-Panzer Dragoon Orta, stunning looking game in the same vein as the originals.

-Wreckless and Burnout 2 are good racing games.

-While not into FPS the two I recommend are Halo and XIII.  Personally I think Halo is vastly superior to Halo 2.  XIII is based on a French graphic novel and is cell shaded.  It has a great plot and really pretty levels.

-Wrath Unleashed is a great little turn based strategy light mixed with action game.

-Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc.  Rayman is THE platformer of the current generation.

-Stubbs the Zombie.  A hilarious game - you use your head like a bowling ball, throw exploding organs and get to use the awesome fart attack.

Okay I started making a list of games and it was getting long so no more descriptions.  These are titles that you might find worth further investigation(along with any sequels they might have):

marck ecko, call of cthulhu, fable, the warriors, indigo prophecy, shenmue 2, serious sam, kingdom under fire, conker live and reloaded, psychonauts, destroy all humans, jade empire, knights of the old republic, outrun 2, any oddworld games, otogi, battle engine aquilla, rallisport challenge, amped, max payne, beyond good and evil, midtown madness, cyberia, jurassic park: operation genesis, serious sam, phantom crash, kung fu chaos, mechassault, myst 3, hunter the reckoning, project gotham racing

Awesome! I'm very happy for you, Dave. Oh, and, even though you hate FPS, I HIGHLY reccomend Conker: Live & Reloaded.

BTW, what do you think of the games?

Alienblue, it's hard for me to pinpoint what kind of game you'd enjoy, but here are a few I personally love for the XBOX:

  1. Knights of the Old Republic -- This game is an RPG, but it feels so action-like and fast-paced that it doesn't seem to bore me like many turn-based RPGs do.  The combat system is still essentially turn-based, but it is done in such a way that the action takes place quickly, and you can set your characters to repeat a sequence of battle techniques over and over in a battle.  There are also default sequences for each character which means you don't even have to take part in that decision making like you do in many turn-based games.  The biggest attraction for it however is that storywise it is very much like the original trilogy.  It has archetypes and plot elements that fit the original trilogy in almost every way, including the perennial "Luke I am your Father" built-in identity crisis, and a metallic-voiced Sith villain forced to wear head-gear.  The storyline is unfolding, and very well told.  The graphics won't blow you away, but they are respectable, and the story is the real driving point anyway.
  2. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth -- Survival horror is more of a theme indicator than an actual genre.  A given game under the mantle of survival horror can be anything from a simple point-and-click adventure (Clock Tower) to an RPG (Sweet Home).  But no game seems to cross more genres than this game does.  It is everything from cinematic storytelling, to first-person shooting, to stealth, to a puzzle-based adventure.  And if you love Lovecraft-themed stories as I do, this one is the icing on the cake.  Let's just put it this way, it is extremely rare that a fan of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos is ever treated as well as this game manages to.  Just be sure to remember that this one requires the energy and the patience.  It is by no means an easy game.
  3. Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams -- Forget the Playstation 2 version.  This one has far more content.  Like many games made for both the PS2 and the XBOX, the XBOX version is far better, with another playable storyline and several new endings.  Much later, a Greatest Hits version of the PS2 game was released with this content added in, but that GH version is hard to find.  Why bother when the XBOX game still looks far better.
  4. Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly -- Like the SH2 game I just mentioned, the two FF games on XBOX are FAR superior to their original PS2 releases.  Many more ghosts, better endings and just generally better graphics were the reward for those of us who waited patiently for more than a year for each XBOX game to be released instead of splurging for the PS2 originals.
  5. Indigo Prophecy -- This is based on point-and-click adventure gaming, but the point-and-click interface has been replaced with an excellent and more refined controlling system using the standard controller.  The storyline is compelling as well, gripping you right from the start with a situation that requires your immediate and very urgent attention.
  6. Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon -- This is another classic point-and-click adventure series I personally adore which has been given a 3D facelift and a new completely revamped controlling scheme to replace the old P&C.  I don't know if it's quite as compelling as its predescessors, but it's definitely still in their league.
  7. Syberia -- I have a soft-spot for great storylines in a game.  This is yet another P&C adventure realized into a 3D world, and it's one of the most poignant stories I've seen in a game of that kind in a long time.  Its art style is also a great combination of realistic graphics and clever mechanics.  I can't say any more about that last bit without giving the very unique story away, but trust me on this one, it is very compelling.

I remember you saying something about enjoying beat-em-ups, alienblue, so I'd definitely have to go with Spartan: Total Warrior. One of my personal favorites for the system.

Star Wars: Episode III is one of the best Star Wars games I've ever played, and it can be had for under 20 dollars in several places now, so I highly recommend that one

Plus, the Sonic Mega Collection Plus is one of the best compilations ever, hands down (IMO); it's got all of the 16-bit Sonics, plus the Game Gear versions and a few extra non-Sonic Genesis games thrown in (The Ooze, Flicky)

Halo 1, Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Chronicles of Riddick. All of the games define the word awsome.

I'll go ahead and sort through the other recommendations for you, since most of the games I would have posted have already been listed.

I'll start with which games other posters have suggested that I don't think you'll like. I'll start with Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. These games are hyper-realistic, and pretty slow. They have a large fan base, but I just don't see the appeal. I couldn't even get through the first level in Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. I'd pass on that.

Next, Ninja Gaiden Black. No offense Alienblue, but you had trouble with Super Princess Peach. Ninja Gaiden Black is one of the hardest games ever made, so I wouldn't recommend you get that. Also, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: I personally love the game, and JLH is right about it not being as boring as other RPGs. Nevertheless, if you don't want a long game you should pass on it, because it took me about 40 hours to beat, if I recall correctly.

I'll second these recommendations. To start with Halo and Chronicles of Riddick are excellent games, even if you don't like FPS. The beauty of Halo is the simplicity of it. You can only carry 2 guns at a time, so it really simplifies things, plus it has four difficulties, so you can make it really easy, or really hard. Chronicles of Riddick is just an overall excellent game, and both it and Halo are a good length.

Panzer Dragoon Orta is fun, and given that you seem to like 2d space shooters, it seems like the next step for you is to take it to the third dimension. It's simple but fun gameplay. If you like 3d platformers (I seem to recall you had a good time with Mario 64 for a while) then definitely get Rayman 3 and Psychonauts. You seem to like racing games so get Burnout 3; it's a great arcade racer.

Also, Fable has RPG elements, but it is really more of a beat-em-up with some levelling up thrown in. It was my favorite Xbox game, and it clocked in at under 15 hours. Last, get Jet Set Radio Future/Sega GT. Sega GT isn't all that great, but Jet Set Radio Future is really fun. Besides, t's only $2 used at Gamestop, so even if you didn't like it you wouldn't waste much money.

Alienblue...I am going to make a list of games that tailors to your every gaming need.  I'm reading through the games people listed and I think the XBOX has games that better suit your classic gaming tastes...so here are my xbox recommendations for a classy gamer such as yourself.

Panzer Dragoon Orta - This will be hard to find, but its cheap and well worth it if you do.  Its a classic on rails shooter that harkens back to the days of old.  Pure retro gaming goodness wrapped up in a gorgeous graphical package.

Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast - Well well well, another classic Sega franchise reborn on the xbox.  If you like arcade racers this will serve you well.  Read the Critic's review on Outrun 2.

Burnout 3: Takedown - Another arcade racer that you would probably love.  The game focuses on insane car crashes and its really exciting.  If you can't find Burnout 3 go over Burnout 4 aka Burnout Revenge...both titles are $20 or less.

Gauntlet Seven Sorrows - You don't need long winded stories to have a good time and this game proves it.  I'm pretty sure you're a Gauntlet fan and this game should blow your mind.  Snatch it up if you ever see it.

Family Guy - I know you used to like the show (I agree with you that its crap now), but The Critic seemed to like this game.  Its seems like a it mixes beat em up, platforming and adventure elements.  A nice use of a franchise and its $20 or less.

Psychonauts - If you are craving a REALLY good platformer with a great story and wonderful characters look no further than this game.  Its one of the greatest platformers ever made and you would do well to find this game.  Take note of the awesomeness that is Psychonauts.

Voodoo Vince - Another terrific platformer for the xbox.  I love this game and I can always find time to lose myself in this game.  I wrote a review for this game on this very website...just search for Voodoo Vince in the forum search bar if you want more info.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havok - Rayman games are quickly becoming the new gold standard in the classic platforming genre.  Feel free to pick this game up to see what all the fuss is about.

Beyond Good and Evil - This game follows the classic Zelda formula...if you like Zelda you will probably enjoy Beyond Good and Evil.  Its a terribly underrated game that is worth digging into.

I-Ninja - A great action platformer that stars a cute little ninja guy.  This game is easy to play, funny and cheap to buy.  I was really pleasantly surprised with this one and I think you would be too.

You should know by now that if you see games like Capcom Collection Vol 1 & 2, Taito Legends or Midway Treasures to pick them up instantly.  Although I would recommend getting them on the PS2 before the Xbox...thats a personal choice though.

Anyways, you should have enough games to be on the lookout for so go get em...YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE!!! (sorry I've wanted to say that for a while...I couldn't pass it up)

Being the old schooler you are, I think you would appreciate the neighborhood champ vs. neighborhood champ feel of the online Street Fighter 2 Anniversary Collection.

You can take Turbo Zangief vs. Super Turbo Sagat all day long or the original Guile vs. Championship Edition Bison, etc. It's tons of fun

[/QUOTE]If he doesn't like Splinter Cell type games than whatever but Nija Gaiden isn't that hard. If you stay with it you can beat the game. I beat the game and I'm no king of gaming. Nija Gaiden is the type of game that rewards you trying to find paterns. I think its one of the best game's to come out this decade. Yeah you can give up and cry about how how hard it is but this is the type of game that if you beat ,  you can brag about to your friends about how you beat it. In short it makes you feel like a man. But you think he can't stand a little challenge than whatever.
