Must.  Stop.  Playing.  Tank Combat game.
Some impressions:
Okay, I don't know what's wrong with everyone in the whole world, but Wii boxing is incredible.  I don't know if people just don't know how to play or what, but this game is a total blast.  There's lots of room for strategy in it, and it's really responsive (my fiancee loves it too).  I was a little disappointed at first with "Wii Play", but then I discovered cow racing and, the true heir to the Combat thrown, Tank game (or whatever it is called).  I'm not exaggerating when I say I would have paid the full price just for that one tank game.  It pains me that my best friend, and recent Atari convert based almost solely on hours of 2600 Combat, is 600+ Kilometres away.  He'd love it.  This is the most fun game I've played since Yoshi Touch and Go.  Between all the games, I'm willing to call the Wii the true successor to the joystick era.  Fun, short, simple games that are totally addictive.

Just to get this clear, though, it sounds like a lot of you guys were on the fence about the Wii then your wives pushed you to get it. Would I be right in saying the Wii is indeed attracting the non-gamer crowd?

Well, my fiancee really started modern gaming because of some Gamecube games (Animal Crossing, Some Mario Parties, etc).  However, she wasn't playing everyday until I got the DS, which she loves and basically considers hers now.  At this point, the Wii was a no brainer for her.I mean, if you already love franchises from Nintendo, and you love the DS, why wouldn't you like the Wii?  However, this IS the first time she's actually pushed the idea of buying a system, rather than getting into it after I buy it.

Now I have two friends though, who are fairly hardcore gamers, who are being told by their girlfriends that they are not allowed to bring any other consoles into the house, unless that console is a Wii.

Also, I know one 50+ year old woman in this area who liked the Wii so much when she played it while visiting her children out of province that they sent her one as a present.  Apparently it's quite popular (or should I say bowling and Wii Play are quite popular) with her friends.

I think it is but I really have a hard time believing 50 yr olds and people who dont' normally play video games are going to buy Metroid Prime 3, RPG's and Mario Galaxy. So...I guess you can expect more casual games from Nintendo. I think it will be more telling in a year from now if these same "casual" gamers are still interested in their Wii. Perhaps they will be and I am not bashing Nintendo's strategy. Heck, they have a hit on their hands for the first time in like 15 years so if it works, do it. Personally, I like my online play, Crackdowns and Oblivions of the world and none of those types of games are ever going to grace the Wii. What I have come to believe is that the Wii isn't terrible it just isn't for me. I like Gears of War! I like Rainbow Six! I like Motorstorm! I don't get into the mini games and the Zeldas of the world. I find the Wii's line up to be meager and the 2007 line up to be a joke. However, if I liked Nintendo Franchises and casual games I would love the Wii! They are delivering on their promise that is for sure. I guess if you buy off on it you are golden. If not, I don't think it will convert many people who like more "hardcore" (don't kill me on that, I can't think of a better term) games. The funny thing is the four people I know who own Wii's hardly play it at all. They are either playing Crackdown or Rainbow Six. I ask why and they are like "I finished or got bored with Zelda so what would I be playing?". I think the Wii is doing well but I think it needs more games to keep the momentum going. I am glad you guys are enjoying the system.

I hereby nominate "The Suit" for president of the VGC forums.  That was nicely even-handed.   You criticize the Wii, without being stupid.  You also recognize it's successes.  Anyone who wants to say the Wii isn't for them is A-ok in my books.  Anyone who says "the wii is only for retards and has no good games, and is stupid looking, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a Nintendo fanboy" is a moron.

I want the people who say the latter (you know who you are) to read "The Suit's" reply, then re-read it, then ponder it well.  Then I want you to save it and re-read it every time you are about to post.  Imagine it is like those things that measure kids to get on roller coasters-- your post must be this sensible to be posted.

Yeah, sure, I would agree The Suit is being civil in his tone. That's cool.

I would just ask if The Suit has really been paying attention to the impending releases for the Wii. Every week a major developer announces more and more games for the system, including titles that will be out this year. Examples abound, like Opoona, an original RPG being made by Koei. There is also Victorious Boxers, which looks like the boxing game we all really want after being teased with Wii Boxing (though I do agree with Paul's assessment of Wii boxing). Keep in mind these aren't ports either. There are more examples than the two I've listed.

Of course, many of these are currently Japanese titles..... but you know they'll be localized.

My point is, there is tons of stuff in the pipeline. Of course, Nintendo's system is going to be defined, well, by the games Nintendo makes. But the third parties are hard at work, and each month the Wii stands as the leader in sales (which happened once again in February), more and more will get on the bandwagon.

In fact, indie developers are complaining because all the major third parties are snatching up the SDK's, and Nintendo can't keep up with the demand.

But once again, let me say that I of course think that, if you are a commited gamer (better than the overused term hardcore), it's better to own a 360/Wii combo is you want an affordable way to play more traditional stuff AND the the more risky, innovative Wii titles.

There. One more Wii apologetic post for old time's sake (-:

I would have to respectively disagree with you. Yes, there are games in the pipeline but that doesn't mean they are any good. The best games (in my opinion) are coming out for either the PS3 or 360 or both. Of course, games like Mario G and Metroid should be exceptional but for me, there isn't anything on the Wii that blows me away (for reasons I have already explained). Yes, I know the Wii is selling well now but that is not any indication how it will sell in the future. I think it is more of a curiosity then anything else. Of course, if a year goes by and the Wii is the top seller I would suspect that it will have very good 3rd party support. However, I think the technology may hold the Wii back as witnessed by no truly multiplatform games being released (that I know of at least). So if I am a developer do I make games specifically for the Wii or develop for the 360/PS3? That may be simplifying matters but I think that is what it comes down to. So in my opinion the Wii has to blow away both the 360 and the PS3 and that is a tough thing to predict. But who knows, it just might. I still think the Wii needs more quality games (no more PSP/PS2 Ports, please) to maintain its tremendous momentum. Maybe you all think I am crazy but I still think it is about the games.

Well, I think DS sales demonstrate that it is possible that the Wii's strong sales are anything other than just "curiosity" purchases.  Now, I understand where you're coming from (I like your alter ego's new attitude by the way), but I think if anything the Wii and 360 will both do well, rather than either doing poorly, in the long run.  The Wii needs some more games, thats for sure, but considering that the DS has done so amazingly well, even though it didn't had hardly any games worth playing for its first year, I think the library for the Wii will have time to develop without killing the system in the meantime.

I agree with you 100%. I think ANY system needs some time to get a truly worthwhile game lineup out the door. I think a year from now will be very telling.
