Thought I would start up a Star Trek thread, since we hijacked Voor's thread in the Ask the Critic forum.
To comment on Alienblue's last post there (DS9 and the Dominion War):
At the time of the show, I didn't like it either. It certainly contradicted the whole utopian universe of Roddenberry.
Interestingly, however, as I progressed from my teenage years into adulthood, I began to find the utopian vision of Trek to change from positive and pleasant into naive and unrealistic. Not that we shouldn't try to build a better future... but that future will be somewhere in between the Matrix (real bad) and Star Trek (real good).
So maybe I would actually like the Dominion stuff now. Who knows.
But DS9 just didn't have the strong cast of Next Generation or STTOS. And it did seem like each iteration got progressively weaker. Didn't really like "Enterprise" at all, though the vulcan chick was a hottie.
Incidentally........ Deanna Troi (or was it Troy? Can't remember): Worst Trek Character of all time. Any episode that featured her was barf bag inducing.
And overrated as good looking women go.

The few Kirk era episodes I have seen I liked. I just can't get into TNG. I haven't seen Voyager or Enterprise yet. I've been viewing some DS9 lately and I like it. Hell hath no fury like a pissed off Sisco.

The only Star Trek stuff worth watching in my opinion is the original tv series.

Thank, you, this is my kind of thread-shouldn't it be on STARTREK.COM though? Anyway, For those who don't like Trek, don't TRY...there was a time I didn't like Star WARS (mostly cause I didn't go to the movies in the 70's and hardly anyone had a VCR back then!-I only had the books/comics to go by!). The point is, I don't like Football/Baseball and I don't FORCE myself to watch it! To each his own...
The doniminion War was overraught with too much blood, too much anger. There was SUCH an easy way to prevent this war. Early on, the Dominion-who pretty much OWNED the Gamma Quadrent told Sisko and company to "Stay on your side of the wormhole!" -sooo, WHY didn't they? In an Original series episode, some "aliens" are debating whether to give Kirk Dilithium crystals-they are pacifists and point out that Kirk "Could take them by force.."
"But we won't!-Consider that!" Says kirk. SEE? SEE the difference? Trek became this angry, we'll do and go we're we damn well please and shoot anyone who gets in our way! It SO paralled our culture as a whole, how we were going from the "peace, Man" era to the "drop dead!" era...expected, but does it HAVE to be on Trek? (The Organians also stopped the Federation and Klingons from going to War in one episode-the writers always tried to avoid showing the fedration as as "bad" force. This is interesting in a time when the good ol' US of A is "The evil Empire!).....
Voyager had some good battles but again, they only fought when provoked, when they HAD to. Enterprise I dunno, I stopped watching that. The end of voyager was lame enough but Enterprise was simply awful. Bad idea.
I'm looking forward to the new Kirk-Spock era film coming out next year by JJ Abahms. I hope it brings the OL' Trek back!

Original series is the best series by far. TNG and Voyager have some good episodes as well. As far as DS9, there dominion war season was excellent as well as a few episodes wih vick the hologram late in the series. Does anyone have star trek season series?
I have all 79 original series episodes on 39 VHS. $50 cad on ebay incl shipping.

"does anyone have star trek TV series?"
I have The Next Generation, sesons 1-5 DVD sets; I lost most of my income when season 6 & voyager et al. came out but recently found The first season of Deep Space 9 for $35.
I will buy the original series if I can find it cheap enough (when the Nextgen sets first came out they were $100 each!)
Oh, I also have like 5 double episode original series VHS tapes I got through a club..

I'm not sure I can order there Andrew but just curious- Is that $56.99 for the 3-season complete set or $56.99 for EACH season?
I just saw single seasons at Wal*Mart for $48 each!
BTW, anyone here ever watch the STAR TREK animated series from the 70's? I remember that well, and while the animation was absolutely AWFUL, some of the same writers wrote for it - like the incredible D.C. Fontana- and there WERE a few good stories, especially by Saturday Morning standards. There was a "Yesteryear" episode where Spock had to go back in time and pose as his own relative to set time right- his pet Selak died; this idea would be reused on a nextgen episode when an adult Alexander(Worfs son) comes back....also, The episodes with Harry Mudd and Robert April, the first Enterprise captain. It is on DVD now too.

Well if you buy the crappy bootleg asian dvd's its $56.99 for all three(btw don't even consider). It is indeed $56.99cad each season which is equivalent to $48usd per season. I must have confused you with atarifever who lives in canada. I didn't wait for the dvd's to go down that's why I bought the 39 vhs set for $50cad last year. The quality is solid but rewinding sure does suck. BTW each vhs of the 39 set cost about $35cad originally through cbs home video in the eighties. That's nearly $1400 dollars. Yikes!
