Is the PS3 the new Jaguar?

Ok critic, we get it, you hate Sony and the PS3. According to you there are no good games coming out. Motorstorm sucks, so does NBA Homecourt and heck, throw in Virtual Fighter even though you appear to be the only person complaining about setting up a versus match. Blah Blah Blah....wait till you get a Wii and you have to spend much time tinkering with the controls...you are really going to love that. Blah Blah Blah...I am the Critic and I hate Sony and the PS3. Ok...we get it.

Yea Resident Evil 5 was announced a long time ago as a PS3/360 game.  Ever since the Gamecube debacle of Resident Evil exclusives Capcom has been trying to get the franchise to as many people as possible.  The games cost too much money to make to keep on a single system.

Its funny because the Wii is now the only console getting an exclusive Resident Evil game (Umbrella Chronicles), which is due out by the end of the year.

You know, if the PS3 actually had Tempest 2000 or Aliens Vs Predator I might actually buy the darn thing.  So, right now, you're insulting my Jag.  Shame on you.

<I kid, I Kid>

The better analogy would be comparing it to the Saturn though.  Dual processors that allow for a symphony approach to programming aka Sony's cell processing with it's gazillion cores, aka no one but Einstein can write a good game for it.  Gotta love the marketing hype by both companies.  The PS3 will do well in the long run with its loyalists, same as the Saturn, but pale to the power of the Wii (PS1) and the 360 (N64).

Interesting point about the DS - PSP forshadowing their consoles, Atarifever. But, if you think about it Sony accomplished what they were trying to do with the PSP, (home console  gaming specs, a smattering of multimedia), but how ccould they anticipate the success of the DS? Maybe they got lazy on bringing good, original games over early instead of ports, something Nintendo puts a priority on with their portables (in addition to rereleasing 1000's of their classics), but convential wisdom of the time is that PSP would crush DS and weaken Nintendos hold on their strongest turf. They had no reason at the time to not trust their brand and their strategy.

The point is, the great success of the DS and the early success of the Wii clearly indicate that many people are bored with the status quo, and obviously proccessing power is not the prime motivator for their purchase.

The PS3 is selling pretty decent right now, but I  have a feeling it will start to slide after the hardcore early adopters already have it. Ironically, the biggest nail in the coffin for PS3 is the continued success of the PS2 this Christmas, I think. The general public was apparently not excited enough about the PS3 to justify the cost, so they picked up a 5 year old system with a ton of good, now budget games as a consolation prize. Ouch. The casual gamer has spoken.

I wish someone would speculate on my original post. How big of a user base does Sony need to stay on track?

the PS3 will do fine. For millions of people (not video game nerds) playstion = video games, and playstation 3 = better video games.

Actually, his early impressions on Motorstorm and NBA Street Homecourt have been pretty glowing.  Although I'm shocked he's giving VF5 hard time, that does not change the fact that the PS3 is in trouble, especially considering how sluggish its sales are and how almost all of its third-party exclusives are gone.

And I'm still not sure about Blu-Ray. I was at Best Buy yesterday and saw a display that had two HDTVs next to each other, each showing off HD movies.  On the left, the 360 and its HD-DVD drive were being used to show off The Polar Express, and on the right, the PS3 was being used to show off the Blu-Ray version of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown.  And I have to admit, I found the HD of The Polar Express to look better than Ice Age 2.

I think the issue is that only one game you mentioned (Motorstorm) is going to be a Sony exclusive. That's a bad trend that is starting to rear its head for Sony. Why would you develop a game only for a system that has a 1 to 8 base of potential buyers?

Virtual Tennis 3 was released this week on the 360 and PS3, and it is clearly superior on the 360 because of online play availibility... I think that is another bad sign.

(PS: Has any first place in sales system started so poorly with some trouble moving systems and such negative press? Please tell me if it has, I think that would be interesting to see. After some minor research, this is what I found: Basically, the champs were champs out of the gate, but more over they were praised more than criticized)

2nd Generation Champ: Atari 2600

3rd Generation Champ: NES

4th Generation Champ: SNES

5th Generation Champ: PSX

6th Generation Champ: PS2

7th Generation Champ: (Will the trend be reversed? Why would it?)

Its not that their third party exclusives are gone...its just that are losing already existing IPs.  They still have plenty of excluvsive 1st and 3rd party stuff...they have just as much as the 360.  All it takes is a few games to change everybody's tune...look at what Gears of War did for 360 naysayers.  All it takes is one single game.  I'm not saying that the PS3 has a game like that, but you never know.
