Is the PS3 the new Jaguar?
John-boy, you have kinda done your point in, my friend. Your buddies that have a dusty PS2 in the corner are definitely not laying down $600 for a PS3 when the 360 is as good and cheaper.
Not so - I know three people that have ordered the PS3 which they will collect tomorrow. They want a playstation - they don't want a wii or a microsoft box with it's whiff of windows. I know one person with a Wii, and nobody with an xbox.

Like I said, playstation has a momentum over here, it is popular and people like playstation games. They are not nerds, they don't care about specifications of processors and all that rubbish. They liked playstation 2 and playstation 3 is better. That's the view. I'm not saying they are right and getting into geeky arguments about which system is best is irrelevant.

By the way, I am not a Sony fanboy. Heck, I don't even own a PS3. My experience with it, like the Wii is through friends and family who own the systems. I just think it is juvenile for the critic to report every minor blemish he has with any system; it just seems pointless. I don't think he is any more bias then the rest of us and I respect his work and enjoy his reviews.

Tell us, Shawn.  Tell us about how you don't like people being "juvenile" with their posts.  He who dives into every tame discussion with harsh words and personal attacks and turns it into a "You are a moron for your opinion" argument, no matter what the topic.  Tell us all about it.

Are you kidding me? The problem here is that as soon as somebody disagrees with bashing Sony or doesn't support Nintendo a 100% everybody gets up in arms. Personally, I don't care. Go put your Mario underoos on and go play Zelda. Seriously....

the PS3 will do fine. For millions of people (not video game nerds) playstion = video games, and playstation 3 = better video games.

Okay, I understand you may be 16 or something, but allow me to point out something.
hahaha!

I'm 36 and my first computer was a Sinclair Spectrum in 1982! I've owned a Spectrum (the best!), NES, Amiga, Megadrive/Genesis, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour and a DS Lite.

So let me point out something - Most people I know DO NOT play video games. A few that do are not IN to video games, it is an occasional box in the corner. To them, Playstation IS video gaming. That may change, sure, but there is a still a lot of momentum behind Sony with these people and developers know that.

But you sound like such a freaking expert, you must be right
Are you Nintendo Fanboys going to jump off a cliff when they end up as a softwared company?  I can't wait to play Zelda version 989 on my PS3!!!! Anyway, I'll go "troll" elsewhere since this site is dedicated to the Nintendo faithful. Heck, even the Critic has turned into the ultimate fanboy and he doesn't even own a Wii!!!!!!

I'm out of here! Enjoy!

"Are you kidding me?" has become your signature.

There's a little bit of that here I admit.  When HD-DVD disc sales were outnumbering Bluray, some declared the contest over.  Now that Bluray is not only outselling HD-DVD but has sold more total altogether (in three months even), any number of excuses are being employed to explain the success away.  However, that is just human nature, and generally I tend to write that off because if the success continues, those individuals will admit they were wrong.  If not, then they will have had a right to be suspicious.  The problem with YOU is that the approach cannot be explained by human nature alone.  Unless someone praises Sony 100% at all times and in every way, you call them a Nintendo fanboy, EVEN if the Wii or any other Nintendo system is never mentioned.

You are so transparent.  It's almost cry-my-eyes-out sad that you don't realize it.  That you don't though is obvious.  Anyone else who said these types of things would realize pretty quickly how foolish they appeared to be, and would subsequently quiet down until their reputation healed.

Because you assumed my opinion was based on age - because you think you know it all and have a wealth of experience to back it up (ie too much time playing games, and anybody who has an opinion contrary to yours must be 16). I'm just telling you how it is, from my perspective. But I bow to your greater geekness.

No, it isn't that I think I know it all.  I thought the only way someone could not realize that pedigree cannot continue to sell systems, was if said person had no historical perspective.  I assumed the only way someone on a videogame site could lack that perspective would be having not lived through any of that historical period.  Now I have been set right on the fact that it is not your age that led to your inability to have seen this thing happen 3 times before.  Thus, my question has become how it is possible that you cannot seem to remember that the exact thing you said couldn't happen has happened 3 times before (and seeing you were a Specy owner, I assume you've further seen this sort of thing happen in the computer industry).

VideoGameCritic,

Instead of comparing the PS3 to the Jaguar, a better comparison would be to the 3DO. Let's look at the similarities:

-Both were the 'baby' of the Video Game Industry's 'brain child'. For the PS3, it was Kutaragi. For 3DO, it was Trip Hawkins.

-Both consoles had unprecedented pre-launch buzz.

-Both refused to call themselves game machines. From Wikipedia concerning 3DO: "For a significant period of the products life cycle, 3DO's official stance on pricing was that the 3DO was not a video game console, it was a high-end audio-visual system and was priced accordingly, so no price adjustment was needed." Sony used the same reason for not lowering the price of the PSP and will probably do the same for the PS3.

-Both systems sought convergence of digital entertainment.

-Had heavy third party support.

-PS3 costs $599. 3DO costs $699.

Difference? Well, the 3DO was sold for a profit and the PS3 loses around a $100 (which makes the prices even more even!).
