I worked in substance abuse for a few years, and I can tell you several symptoms that users exhibited I often saw in myself and other gamers in a much milder form. Not in the last 5-8 years, but I became a believer in video game addiciton after getting addicted to starcraft.
Yes, anyone can get addicited to anything; but just like a casino is built around science and physics to appeal to certain aspects of the human psyche, so are video games (to some extent).

PSOne got me.
Well, way back in the day, when I was young, I'd play with our Odyssey2 for hours on end. But not one single game.
I spent hours immersing myself in the greatness that was Driver. I lived in Resident Evil for awhile--nothing's better than playing way into the wee hours of the morning, when you start to get so sleep-deprived that you begin imagining the creatures are in the dark kitchen of your unlit house, creeping up behind you... I got a thrill out of a rental of Silent Hill, too. Went outside and it had become foggy and dark out--I don't need to tell you that I ran to my car like some stupid, scared kid coming out of a theater after a slasher flick. More recently, I've found myself burning hours away trying to complete Burnout: Revenge or top my Tetris score.
But the Resident Evil games are the ones that reliably trap me for hours at a time.
