Is it reasonable to ask Sony to sell a PSP at the same price as a DSLite?

I kind of agree.  For $130 I don't mind tossing my DS in my car and leaving it there as the goto device when I've got time to kill when I show up early to someplace.

However, even at $170 the PSP seems a bit excessive in price plus it just looks like I'd scatch the heck out of it.

The biggest selling point for me for the PSP is the homebrew scene.  It's incredibly easy to hack which on the flipside is one reason why those that own a PSP don't buy new games for it.  Sony keeps updating the firmware which negates the homebrew code.  So you have a large number of folks that won't buy a new game just so they don't have to go through the hassle of redoing their firmware/homebrew stuff.  I'm probably in the minority here but having a SNES emulator on a PSP would be awesome; though, not so awesome that I'd have to redo my work whenever I buy a new game.  Gotta love the Catch-22 Sony placed themselves into with this system.

I agree. They do need to start lowering that price more. That $30 isn't cutting it, They need to make it $150 like some one said before.

I really don't see why there is so much hate for the PSP.  I don't own one, but I really want one.  Once that Castlevania game hits I will pick one up.  Plus I'll go back and get all the games that are budget priced.  As long as there are copious amounts of games I want the system's price doesn't matter.

Sony has sold more than 20 million PSPs...hardly a failure by any standards.  Its actually a pretty good first attempt at a handheld.  Sure UMDs sucks balls, and the system had way too many ports in the beginning...it has tons of great games for it now.  I see the PSP sticking around for at least 3 more years.  Giving it a 5 year life span...not too shabby.

The DS isn't going to be dethroned anytime soon, but I will give Sony credit for creating a decent product.  I really hope they make another PSP after this one dies.  It will be interesting to see if they learned from their mistakes.

About homebrew - I saw on a website some company (great detail, I know) is making a glorified SD card for the DS, that fits in the DS cartridge slot. I think it was going to go for over a $100, which is plenty, but some people will doubtless be interested.

Emulation and ROMS is always a hot topic on this board, here is my take:

When I first became aware of it, maybe 7-8 years ago, I downloaded a NES and SNES emulator and probably a dozen ROMS for each. I knew it was stealing, but I was curious to see how good the quality was and couldn't resist. I had previously owned most of the games I had dowloaded, but I know, that is pretty weak as well. But the funny thing is, I just couldn't get into the games, I think it was a combination of playing on a PC and the fact that they came so easily and all at once. I would play one for 5 minutes, get bored, try another, etc, etc. They were good games and all, but I just couldn't put any consistent effort into playing them and eventually deleted them. I don't know if anyone else has had an expierence like that, I call it the "ROM effect". Crazy as it may sound, I think actually spending money on games is a motivator to play them, somehow.

I gripe about the price Nintendo charges for rereleased games, but of course they have every right to be paid for their work, and I felt bad when I heard early on the amount of Nintendo Roms that were being utilized by PSP owners. I bought into the early hype that Sony was going to crush Nintendo in the handheld market, and I found it plenty ironic that emulation would be a huge factor. (Aparently it wasn't) I am really happy Nintendo has done well with the DS, and if that makes ME a fanboy, excellent. A healthy Nintendo is a good thing for the industry as a whole, and competiton is a great thing.

And PSP ain't gonna die, it just looks somewhat bad because it is being compared to one of the fastest selling game system ever. I doubt I will ever own one, but I wish everyone would adopt the flip screen style for portables. Protect those beautiful screens!

I agree that the pricing is still too high, but after hearing that Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles is going to come out for it and will include a new Dracula X, the original, and Symphony of the Night, it makes me really want one. I might find a good PSP on ebay with a few games and save some money there. I've heard Metal Gear Portable Ops and Killzone Liberation were good and I might buy them when I eventually get a PSP. The DS ,to me, is still the better system but that's because it's cheaper, has more games, and has more games that I enjoy, but I may have to pick up a PSP soon just for those games I'm missing out on.

not only does it need a price drop, but it needs a new hardware design with better controls, and the ability to play games from flash memory to improve the battery life
