Sony Cuts PSP Price...

Well after some of what we'd seen around here, it was nice to see someone here who could dislike Nintendo and still use real human language to communicate ideas.

Sony Cuts PSP Price...

I would not mind a new redesign with two analogs so that I can play my FPS. That would be nice.

Sony Cuts PSP Price...

Postby a1 » April 10th, 2007, 2:24 pm

Hmm. This page has actually really made me want a PSP. My main problems with it are the price-which I've already mentioned-, and the hardware itself, I actually see about 7 games I'd want to pick up at this point (sounds low, but I'm talking about games I'm really interested in, there are always some that I'd pick up after renting them or seeing good reviews).

I agree that the PSP could use a flip top screen. After the GBA SP I just can't see myself owning a handheld that doesn't protect the buttons and screen. Also, I hate the memory the PSP uses. If it was regular SD cards I'd be all for it, but Sony instead went with something that is only used on the PSP, which makes them a lot more expensive. I was really glad that Nintendo went with cartridges for the DS, because I really don't want to have to deal with memory cards for a portable system. I know the memory stick allows you to listen to music or whatever, but I just want to save my games; I already have an ipod.

I wish I had at least seven games I really wanted on it.  In the past, the total was four, but UGnG though beautiful was a disappointment to me, and the Capcom Collection with all of the arcade (and SNES) GnG games were already on other compilations for the big screen (which I prefer anyway).

Right now it's down to two -- Silent Hill 0rigins, and the Dracula X compilation.  For all I know, those could be ported to the PS2 or PS3 in the near future, but for now they are definitely on my list.  Exit is a fun game, but it isn't a system seller for sure.

To be fair, the memory sticks actually work in a lot of other Sony products.  For instance, they work in the PS3, my Sony digital camera, and my Sony camcorder.  In the latter case though, I can also save to mini-DVDs, which seems like the smarter thing to do.  Since the PS3 will also take standard SD cards too, it seems like the PSP would be better off if it had that option as well.

I pretty much use my PSP as an iPod.  I save music on it, and play it around work, and elsewhere.  Even when I do rent games for it every now and then, I play them using the TV adapter.  The picture isn't the best, but I know that I will prefer doing that when Silent Hill 0rigins finally comes out.

If the memory stick works in other Sony products than it is still annoying that Sony created something that is only used in their brand. Standard SD cards can be used in pretty much any brand of digital camera. Are there non Sony brand memory sticks?

Anyway, here's my list of games if you're curious:
Daxter- It didn't get stellar reviews, but it looks like it went back to the platforming roots of the original Daxter, so it sounds good to me.
Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters-Another entry into a popular PS2 franchise, and once again this didn't get fantastic reviews. Still, it averaged around 8, and I loved Ratchet and Clank 2 and 3.
Powerstone Collection- Powerstone 2 may have been my favorite Dreamcast game, and since I no longer have a Dreamcast, this collection is a must have.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops-I liked the first 3 Metal Gear Solids, so I can't imagine not liking this one.
Dracula X Collection-Well, who doesn't want this one?
Hot Shots Golf-I know it's a port, but I really liked this game when I had a PSP before. It's great to just play a hole and put it down; the perfect quality for a portable game.
Capcom Classics Collection Remixed-I don't really care if it is on PS2. A good 2d compilation makes for a great portable game.

That makes 7, and with the exception of Metal Gear Solid, I think all of those are great games to play for a couple minutes, then put away. In addition to those there are quite a few games I'd be willing to shell out 7 bucks to rent, such as Wipeout, Infected, and Loco Roco. The PSP certainly doesn't have the quality lineup that the DS has, but it's got a respectable amount of games now.

Well I agree, but they were hoping it wouldn't be just their products.  It's typical of Sony to try to push a proprietary format by using something that has a lot of hype around it.  They've been doing it for so long that it doesn't surprise me anymore.

Daxter got great reviews.  Gamespot gave it a 9.1 and reports that it received reviews that average at 8.7.  In fact, Gamespot named it best platformer of the year, beating out New Super Mario Bros.

I disagree with Gamespot on that, but not enough to throw a fit or anything.  Though the game was fun, I didn't get into it, but it was definitely worth a rental.  Then again, I was never really into the Jak games anyway.

I think the PSP is coming into its own, but the kind of games I want to play that I can't find anywhere else are still missing from the system.  If Capcom Collection Reloaded were PSP-only, I would have definitely gotten that one just for the Ghosts N' Goblins games.  But since those games were already released on the Capcom Collection for the PS2 and XBOX more than year ahead of the PSP compilation, I just don't need it.

Out of all the complaints I've heard about the psp, I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about the fact the prices of games are horrible. It's either 40 or 50. They need to lower the prices because paying 50 for a portable game is disgusting.

Shoot, I forgot about that. $40 I could live with, but $50 is too much for a portable game. Along those lines I hate how PS3 and 360 games are $60. After all those years of $60 to $70 cartridge games we finally had a reasonable price for games. The standard for years now has been around $30 for portables and $50 for consoles. At least Nintendo still has it right.

I agree that the PSP game prices have been pretty bad.  Much like the UMD movies cost more than regular DVDs, PSP games often costs MORE than their PS2 counterparts!  What kind of crazy mixed up world is Sony living in?

Granted, DS games are not cheap, but at least they're sold as cartridges - a far better media than UMDs.  No load times, more compact, and far more reliable.

I'm not aware of any 50$ PSP games, I think 40$ is standard at EB for big titles, while many new DS games like Yoshi's Island 2 for the DS start at $35.

Just picked up three of the 5 PSP games I really want new for $20 each at a EB, and the other two should be 20 each when I track them down.
