Just wanted to say that recently I've been enjoying reviews from Gamespot (etc.) on Virtual Console games and comparing them to the critic's reviews.

gamespot have been giving VC games mostly mediocre reviews and score them as if they modern releases.

They also have an annoying phobia against score-based games.

"Doneky Kong sucks, there's only 3 stages, so you'll have beaten the game in 5 minutes. Grade F!"

Blah.

Did you really read the Donkey Kong review? lol

Reviewing them with a fresh perspective for new gamers (The ones that actually need these reviews) seems appropriate. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't have nostalgia to fall back on if they waste their money on something like Splatterhouse.

Yeah, my bad, I'm mixing up reviews for both games and game sites here, but it's a fact that both IGN and Gamespot have given these old score-based games a lot of crap for being "too short". Is it really that hard to review them for what they are, like pretty much all the reader reviews on both their sites and sites like GameFAQs do?

you can call it fresh, if you consider fresh a synonym for ignorance.

even after geometry wars showed newer gamers the concept of playing for score, classic games are getting ripped a new one for the wrong reasons. at least that dk review was correct in pointing out the arcade original is a much better game.

i also think that simple games deserve a simple grading scale. using a 100 point rating scale is complete bs.

So who wants to bet they'll give Galaga (soon heading to US VCs, already out in Europe and Japan) a score of 3 or less?

If I had a Wii, I think the only game I'd get for the VC is TMNT: The Arcade Game.  It got a pretty decent score (the critic gave it a C-), and was a blast with other people.

Yea, classic games are getting horrible reviews, but more recent ones (say, for the SNES and up), seem to be a bit better.

Game reviews really caught on more in the Playstation/N64 era as games got longer and longer and became difficult to try them out. For VC games, why bother reading reviews? Just use that same amount of time to try out the roms in emulation. If you are having fun playing it on a keyboard sitting at the computer, then it should be more fun playing it on your TV! Since there are no demos available and the games revolve around arcade-like gameplay, I think this is the best solution.

My favorite VC review place has been http://www.vc-reviews.com/ . I prefer smaller game sites for my reviews than the large ones like IGN or Gamespot.
