Grrr, stupid Wii connection set-up!!

Postby BanjoPickles1 » April 14th, 2007, 12:25 am

I can't get this to work!! I just set up my high speed internet the other day so I could get online with the Wii and I can't do it!! I was told that it was as simply as turning on the Wii, going to internet, and checking for a connection but it keeps telling me that it's unable to connect, after giving me a 5 digit error code! I put in wireless connection(we have a router/moden combo), picked an access point, and during the connection test it wouldn't work. I went to their website to see if that'd help but all it told me to do was change channels from 1 to 3 or something, which I did but it still didn't help!! WTF am i doing wrong!??!?!? I want to get my VC on!

Are you sure your router/modem combo is Wii compatible? Mine from the cable company wasn't Nintendo DS compatible for example, so I had to buy the USB wifi adapter.

As far as I can tell, you are only missing one step.  When I first tried, it gave me a 5 digit error code also.  So I typed that code along with something like "Wii error code" into Google, and got links to message boards, both Nintendo sponsored and independant, that told me I had to change my router to Channel 11.  After that it worked perfectly.

This is very simplistic, but for wireless stuff it always seems to be the thing that works in the end: Try power cycling the router and modem (unplug both, wait a moment, and try again).

If, for example, my modem and router are on the second floor of my house and my Wii's in the basement would it still connect?

I recommend that you change your router to a frequency (is that the right word) of 1 or 11 instead of the 5 that most routers are on. This solved my problem.

Hmm. Wi-fi stuff does actually work better, not worse, when the router is above everything else. The wi-fi signal is supposed to do better going down to things as opposed to up.

However, the 2nd floor to basement deal might be a little much. I might look into getting some kind of wireless repeater. Not another router or something that will be hard to set up, but something like the linksys range extender product that just plugs into the wall and automatically bounces the signal.

I tried using a wireless router, a wi-fi dongle, and finally even the ethernet adapter to get online, and I still haven't been able to do it. I called the Nintendo tech support, and they hadn't even encountered my error code before. I'm starting to think it's just a problem with my modem at this point, maybe it's the same with you.

From what I have heard, the problem is always inconsistencies between the Wii and the router, not a malfunction in either.  Just need to get them both to find each other and shake hands.
