Nintendo has said that more Wiis will be available in the following months, so even if the Critic is right we'll never know. If they show up it could be increased production, or it could be that they're holding back.
When Wii Play is your top performer you are in trouble...I guess people really needed that extra controller. Sorry but Wii Play is BORING!!!!!
I agree that Wii Play is boring, but it sells because it's a controller and a game for 10$ more than just a controller, which means the vast majority of people buying a controller will opt for that package. And the vast majority of Wii owners ARE interested in having  more than one controller, beause multiplayer is fun. This isn't a sign of trouble at all.
I live in a town with a population of only 6000, and yet our local Wal-Mart seems to get a shipment of 15 Wii's nearly every week.  I don't imagine it's worth a trip to New Brunswick, but if the Critic is looking for a Wii, we've got plenty of them up here.

How could anything not be worth a trip to New Brunswick?  I'd love an excuse to head over there for a bit.

I'm currently living in a town with 1200 and no stores that sell Wiis, but I got mine in a town of about 10,000.  Seems lke the smaller centres are having an easier time meeting supply.  My home town has 6000 people and had Xbox 360s pretty readily available in Wal-Mart at Christmas last year, so it seems to be a general trend.  Or maybe it's just because the east coast of Canada is so totally awesome.
You are correct sir.  Eastern Canada is awesome.  And I think you're right about smaller centres being able to meet supply easier.  Even a few of the towns I've been to in Maine seem to have avoided the Wii shortage.
One scenario that did come to mind is that perhaps, realizing that some of the big name titles they expected to be either launch titles or sometime in Q1 (Metroid, Smash Bros., etc.) have been delayed. Realizing the potential these titles have to sell Wii's, and knowing the playing field will be more even later in the year (with the Wii's novelty factors will have worn off somewhat), maybe they held off production so more systems would be available when these important games hit.

Who knows?

Well, noone commented on my post from Freakenomics, but this is a very good point, Rob that I said once or twice and noone commented on because people want to b*tch about/ defend Wii play.

This is the truth: Business runs in quarters. Nintendo wants consecutive successful quarters to make stockholders happy. There is a software quality shortage right now. They have surpassed their goals in hardware sales this quarter. Shortage creates hysteria and keeps hype going. When games like SM Galaxy, Metroid and SSB Brawl drops, software sales will keep the boat afloat. Expect console shipments to increase immediately because their quarter just ended with no major games in sight.

I'll concede that this scenario makes the most sense out of all the "Nintendo is holding em' back" theories I've seen.

If it were proven true somehow, I would be a little dissapointed in the Big N. Sure, a company has to do what it feels is in its best interest. It's no charity. But I also think that part of your "best interest" is to give good service to your loyal customer base.

Though Nintendo's actual customer service is legendary in the industry, holding back Wii shipments is not giving good service to another set of customers: the stores that are stocking your product.

I wonder if we'll ever know?
