Will Sony Survive?

Postby Alienblue » April 16th, 2007, 1:16 am

Remember that Ps2 commercial that had the kid of the future holding a sphere saying "Welcome to playstion #? (I don't remember what number they said, 38? 62? Am I close?)"

Anyway, with all the problems PS THREE is going through, do y'all think they will survive? By their own merits or only if Blu ray does? How SHOULD they survive?

*Release a killer app like HALO everyone wants?
*Redesign the system so it is cheaper, more "slimline"?
*Produce games for other consoles like Sega?
* Trash the PS3 immidiately and release PSFOUR?

All of the above? What do others think? Or am I a @#$!head and a jerk for posting this, and sony will do well on their own, thank you very much! Phbbbt!

Short answer: Yes.

I think the Wii is losing steam already. Sony can only pick up steam from here. Everyone hates the Xbox in Japan. When they release God of War 3, they'll be A-OK again.

A lower price and some really good exclusives is what they need.
Branching out isn't going to do much good, people generally don't buy Sony consoles to play Sony games, they buy them to play exclusive Square Enix, Capcom, Konami and Namco games (did I forget any huge players?). If those games aren't there, the console will mainly sell to fanboys who buy it because it says Playstation on the box.

seeing how no console has ever 'lost steam' after launch to the point where they lose their market position, this just wont happen with the wii. third parties follow install bases, and if the wii keeps selling in these numbers, like the ps2, it will become the king of shovelware, and also like the ps2, throw more darts at the wall, and some of those games will turn out to be great.

i dont see the playstation name dying, but the biggest folly sony pulled with the PS3 was trying to throw everything but the kitchen sink into it. convergence is a good strategy on paper for a multi-faceted company like sony, but when the extra features start to outshine the main purpose of the product, the result is a product that has a 50% premium in price point over the competition.

what i see is sony selling off the playstation brand or spinning it off into its own company. that way, the focus will be on games first for the new playstation brand. sony, in turn, can make a sweetheart deal, (for example, they would get money for every game sold on a blu-ray disc).

I think the PS3 will be like the SNES.  It'll start out slow, but will likely end up on top (barely if we forget the Japanese market), and will go into the next round seeming a lot less invincible, while the competition looks much more strong and viable.

Either that or they'll just continue to stink it up and drop like Atari did despite numerous other attempts to win back the market.

In either case, this is going to be a bad generation for them compared to the last two, and that is a fact.  I mean, they sold on price point over th Saturn during the early PS1 period and sold on hype over the Dreamcast during the early part of that gen.  They don't have a weakened and disorganized Sega to kick around this time to make themselves look strong, they lost their hype, and they have a terrible price point.  Everything that helped them before they have against them now.  It's nealy impossible that they'll see sales like they did the last two generations by the time this is over.

I don't think the PS3 is going to be on top.  My prediction is that the market is going to even out for all three players this time around, dividing up into something close to even 3rds.

You could also say that that is my hope.  Last year it was only a hope.  But the way things are turning out so early in the game, it looks like it is a distinct possibility.

I agree that it is losing steam, but only in the sense that a little of the crazy hype is fading.  And that is not really a bad thing, because it had to happen at some point.

As far as the PS3, I think it will only pick up enough momentum to compete if Sony can find a way to make it cheaper than the 360.  Otherwise, the 360 has too much of a head start to have people jumping off its boat and buying another $500+ system just for a few "killer apps".  (HATE that term)

Right now it's pretty hard to see any of the 3 consoles becoming a "PS2" sized leader.  So if they really do end up claming thirds do you guys think that overall console generation sales will match the last?  And if they don't is that bad for the industry?

Hmm. The main premise is easy. Sony will survive. They are a mammoth multinational corporation. Okay, sure, that's probably what they said about Chrysler/Ford/GM in the 60's, but it has taken many decades to get where they are now (despite all kinds of huge, huge problems).

So even if Sony is to fall, it will take many decades for them to do so. The PS3 will be, at worst, a misstep that can be overcome if the next console is better.

I take exception to the idea that the Wii is losing steam. Because the only way one can really measure "steam," so to speak, is sales. And the sales are still there. Hence, the Wii still have plenty of steam.

Again, the player in this generation that has me scratching my head the most is Microsoft. I LIKE the system, yet the sales are not great yet, and are absolutely pathetic in Japan (still a very important market). It's like Microsoft can't compete on the open market because they are used to making products that people are more or less forced to use (Windows et al).
