Disgusted at realistic shooters
That being said, is anyone else here actually kind of disgusted at realistic FPS's and shooters in the aftermath of the VT massacre? Not that they had anything to do with the massacre, but I've just come to see them for what they are: simulations of shooting humans. I was playing the PSP Syphon Filter, and thought about how realistic the body movement and blood was, and the reactions of those who get shot. I got to wondering: what if it were real humans?
War games like GRAW looks almost life-like, as does the new GTA. Should this really be our escape from reality? Extremely realistic simulations of war and mindless killing? If kids grew up playing these extremely realistic games (they shouldn't, but many do), wouldn't they be somewhat densensitized to real life violence?

Realistic gun games provide a release for agression. I'd imagine most people have some very violent thoughts. Like aggressive music these forms of media provide an outlet for that.
I used to be against games like GTA because I lost family who were knocked down. But then I recognised it's just a game.
I'm more disgusted by the ability for humans to go to a gun convention and buy 87 guns without giving over personal details and paying in cash without any consequences.
Fair enough. I'm more disgusted by the ability of SOME humans who buy guns to kill other innocent individuals while those who try to buy guns without such intentions are dealt consequences by a bunch of control freaks who can't judge actual crime from implication.

I don't know why the media talks about 'motive'? When you go into a public place and start randomly killing people why take the pretense of pretending that it is something that can be broken down and understood? And why play the guy's suicide tape on the air? The whole thing is sick on many different levels.
Iis ironic, I expected to see suicide bombings/ terrorist attacks in malls and such in this country from terrorists. Instead we have gotten random mass murder, ussually by kids or young people in schools.

mozart the fact is that these crimes wouldn't happen if it was not for the US's gun laws. In the UK we had the Dunblane massacre and that was it. You choose to live in a place where guns are so readily accessible then you have to accept the fact that school shootings are inevitable.

I'm Not sure where I stand on videogames, but they HAVE gotten a lot worse. In the begining (80's) we shot robots and all was good. Then a FEW games came out that were gory or bloody, but mostly you were still shooting zombies or monsters. Now it's real people, who look and ACT like real people.
I don't think games alone cause violence. I mean, there was one guy who killed himself because he was inspired to by a poem- do poem books cause suicide? No. But maybe parents need to think more about instilling real values in their kids. I like GTA but I'd like it BETTER without the violence.

There are things you can do to reduce the likelihood of these tragedies, but looking for scapegoats won't really help. Some people might say that it isn't helpful that in America there is little restriction on kids buying violent video games, I suppose, and there might be a point. But then again in this country there is fairly strong age restriction, but they are all playing Grand Theft Auto anyway, so I don't see what kindd of difference it makes.

The VT killer passed the background checks when he purchased his firearms as he hadn't commited any crimes previously. If we outlawed guns most likely this dumbass would have made a bomb instead. The guy was a hamburger short of a happy meal and there's not much you can do to stop that. Hell, look at Iraq. Those idiots kill themselves all the time and try to take out others when they go. Do you think outlawing guns there will stop them? Idiots are idiots and will find a way to harm others.

And, simply put, if I had a choice between a society that had less individual rights that was slightly less safe and a society that was slightly safer but less individual freedoms, I'll take the slightly less safe society, 7 days of the week and twice on Sunday.
Remember, Patrick Henry said "give me liberty or give me death." He didn't say "give me a fairly reasonable restricted liberty or I'll sort of pout in the corner."
