I just had to respond to this because I've heard this argument from baseball 'pureists' for decades and I've never understood it.
Man, I am glad someone else said this. I started to write something last night, but I was too tired to write up something meaningful. If any sport between those two is like chess, it is definitely American Football.

If you think pitchers just toss the ball in there any old way, I can see you thinking that. You'd be wrong, but I could see you thinking that way. The sport you, and the person you were responding to have just described is softball. Of course softball is like checkers; it's made to be played by drunk people who aren't good or sober enough to play baseball.

I don't mean to interfere but while we're talking about football, have ya'll seen 'Facing the Giants'. It's the best movie I've seen in years. Everyone says the same thing...at first it feels like a TV movie (acting, etc.), but pulls at everyone's hearts by the end.
I love it!!

I think baseball fans fool themselves into believing there is strategy involved because it's such a stat-dependent sport. This so many statistics being tracked and rank, that HAS to mean there is loads of strategy right? Wrong. I'm not saying there is no strategy at all in baseball, just that it is the merest fraction of that available in football.

If you don't think there is a ton of strategy in baseball you are sorely mistaken. I have played both sports for most of my life and while football appears more complex to the naked eye, it really isn't. People tend to think baseball is a simple game because when you watch it on TV the game focuses on two things...a pitcher and a batter. There is far more going on every single pitch than what the average joe sees on TV. Baseball is in a league of its own when it comes to strategy.
Football you have to memorize plays, but alot of the time its the same play in different formations to counter whats going on defensively. Just because there are several people doing different things during a play doesn't make the game more complex or deep. Football is a great sport, but it doesn't hold a candle to baseball in terms of strategy and overall depth. I think football is a better showcase of raw althletic talent rather than strategy.

the amount of strategy that goes into the x's and o's of a sport does not make it exciting, if it did, chess would be a major sport.
Oh, and one more thing: Screw football. I care not a whit about football until the baseball season is 100% over. It's football that interferes with baseball, not the other way around.

I agree with you on this point. I enjoy watching football, but I can't get into it until baseball is over (or my team is eliminated...Go Giants!)
And Critic, if you think baseball games are long, what about football games. They're easily longer on average. and there's only like 3 minutes of actual action in every football game.

The reason why 3+ hour football games aren't a problem is because teams only play one game a week and 16 games in a season. Baseball teams, on the other hand, play 6 or 7 games a week and 162 games a season. Having to watch a 3-4 hour baseball game nearly every night for 6 months is a bit much.
And I'm not sure what football games you watch, but the ones I watch usually have more than 3 minutes of action.

Here you go. They just created major league baseball in Isreal. 2 major differences:
Games are only 7 innings. And in the event of a tie, there is no extra innings, instead a home run derby to decide the winner!!
That's awesome!

Another point I've often had baseball diehards try to throw at me; how can I enjoy football if baseball slowness is an issue. There is *way* more action and movement in football in a single quarter than there is in your average entire 9 inning baseball game. Heck, one of the most sought-after and celebrated stats in baseball is a NO HITTER! By definition that means you'd have spent the entire game watching absolutely nothing happen. Wow, sign me up! That's like watching a football game where zero yards are gained. Wheeee.

If you wouldn't find a no hitter exciting, it's because you don't understand the game. Please don't comment again until you do.
