A little Bit more?

Postby Alienblue » April 21st, 2007, 1:44 pm

I was curious as to how many bits the PS3 , Wii and X360 are.
I know people don't seem to care anymore, quoting processor speed and video ram, but I think it is relavent. The lastgen consoles were all 128 bit, right? Are these 256 bit? And is there a limit as to how high bits can go? Are they still 128 bit with higher resolution, more ram et al. or will we someday see a 1,280 bit system?
also

*How many bits are the DS and PSP? 64?

* Did anyone ever figure for sure how many bits the Atari Jaguar really was? 16, 32, 64 or "all"?

Do the MATH....do the MONTHTER MATH!

I don't think bits are relevant. At all.
I haven't done any research, but I'm pretty sure that bits only matter with 2D games. Once you get into 3D, it doesn't matter. Feel free to correct me, though.

They were never relevent, it was simply a marketing term. The Intellivision was a 16 bit console for example.

I've always been curious about that too Alienblue. I guess that term was just phased out after the N64 PSX generation.

Was the "64" in N64 relating to anything involving the power of the system?

I seem to recall Sony making a huge deal about the PS2 being 128 bit. Possibly Sega as well.

C'mon, doesn't anybody KNOW how many bits these nextgen systems are? There must be info somewhere.

They must plan on making at least ONE or 2 2-D games for them, like a new metal slug.

For the record, the fact that Intellivision was 16 bit made a huge difference. It had the SAME AMOUNT OF MEMORY as the Atari 2600, 4K! But the double speed processor allowed for better games. There must be someplace with info.... I would guess Wii is still 128 bit, PS3 and X360 256.

O.K. Alien, I will go as I remember 'em

4 bit - Atari 2600
8 bit - NES
16 bit - SNES
32 bit - PS1
64 bit - N64
128 bit - Dreamcast

Dreamcast is the last system I remeber as being advertised as 128 bit...I have no idea how GC, XBOX or PS 2 were rated 'bit' wise, that was when they were rated more by traditional computer specs.

As for PSP, I believe it to be more powerful than the PS1 but less than the PS 2

As for DS, I think it has 2 - 32 bit processors?, but I believe it is not really comprable to PS1 and definitely much less than N64.

Hopefully if I am mistaken on these someone will correct them.

The PS2 was 128 bits, and advertised as such. As for the GC and Xbox, they were 32 and 64 bits, but I forgot which were which. It's nothing that really mattered anymore.

Turbrograhix-16 and Atari 2600 are 8-bit machines.

Neo Geo and Intellivision are 16-bit machines.

It is EXTEMELY irrevelent what "bit" a system is, history has shown it doesn't speak of a system's true power and graphics output.
