VGC Gets a Wii!

Could you tell us about the crowds you were with? Were they mostly parents in line? Did anyone not get a Wii that was in line? I've heard of Best Buys selling out and employees being shocked that people still line up.

Personally I've waited in about 7 lines for one of these things (between myself and waiting with a few friends) and to be honest there really is no ryhme or reason to the people buying it.

If I had to choose I would say that the main category of people buying the system was Males/Females ages 15-30.  After that I saw mostly parents buying it for their children.  The thing that really shocked me was the amount of females that wanted one.  I talked to a few of them and most wanted it for themselves, while a few gamer girls wanted it for their husbands.  Also alot of women are DS crazy.  They played those things while waiting in line to help pass the time.  It was a very strange experience for me.  I know that females like to play videogames, but I don't know any personally that actually own systems.  So it was a little eye opening for me.

Right now the Wii is basically selling to pretty much all demographics.  I also heard a few people complaining how their 360 was broken and they decided to go with Wii.  A few said they wanted it over the PS3 because the games are meant to be played with the whole family...thus replacing boardgame night or something.

I was at the gym last night looking for a magazine to read while on the treadmill.  All of the good ones were gone and the only one that looked half-way decent was something for families.  I don't remember the name of it but what caught my eye was an ad by Nintendo.  It was all about setting aside one night of the week for a game night with your Wii.  Invite your kids' friends over so you'll know where they're at.  Have a competition with your kids and get them into teams.  Alternate teams weekly so everyone gets a chance to be on each other's teams.  Give them team colors early in the week so they can foster a little competition.  Nintendo's hitting the moms hard on family time, which is kind of cool.

Based on last month's sales data I don't think Nintendo's holding back stock, they just can't make enough of the damn things if moms are going to be buying them as a family "let's play" together tool.

Sweet!  I'm surprised that you didn't tell us what games you got in the same post.  Of course, you might be holding that information back until the reviews come out.  If you didn't already get Super Paper Mario, you should take some time between mowing the lawn and scrubbing the toilet and go pick it up.  I thought it was a great game when I first bought it and played it.  Now that I have finished Chapter 3, I am having a very hard time keeping this game out of my mind when I am not playing it.  My wife asked me yesterday when I was gonna be playing it again because she likes watching it.  What a great game.

Now you have an interesting challenge before you. The major game review sites have been blowing their Wii reviews (i.e. "Twilight Princess is too short. It should be 500 hours, etc. etc). It will be interesting to see if your Wii reviews will match many game players feelings (rather than hardcore nerdy reviewers).

How many hours of gameplay is the most annoying phrase. I've been playing ocarina of time and as good as it is, I find rpg's too much of a commitment. Too many things to do. Oot and twilight princess are probably about the same length and I find that more than enough. Its annoying too play a game that never seems too end.

Which games did you get with your Wii Dave?  It doesn't necessarily mean these will be the first that get reviewed, but I'm curious which (if any) games were the first you got along with the pack-in "Wii Sports" disc.

Completely agree. A lot of recent RPGs I find myself never actually finishing beause they are simply too long. And they STILL get pepper for being too short, guh. Hello, reviwers, we normal people don't play games all day, and we like to finish our games as well.

*sigh*

Zelda is not an RPG. It's just a long-a$$ Action Adventure.

Thank you.

Thanks for pointing that out, Funk. Calling Zelda an RPG does a disservice to both genres. Zelda and Final Fantasy (to name two games from both forms) share strong narrative elements, but are otherwise totally different.

An RPG is going to stress, depending on its style, stat based character development. You are always angling to improve the skills of your character. Some are heavier than others: Oblivion, Baldur's Gate (for the PC), and other games of that ilk are very heavy on the stats: you can customize your player to an extreme level and even make items yourself.

Final Fantasy is in the middle. There is enough stat driven gameplay to keep you busy, but it isn't terribly heavy. Then you have the so called "Action RPGs" like Diablo and Jade Empire. I guess Zelda would be the closest to this, but even in Action RPGs you have stat based leveling.

Zelda is an adventure game because it has none of these elements. Characters to not improve in adventure games, only get better items and weapons occasionally. But Link is no better a swordsman at the beginning of the game than the end. He is also not any stronger, other than an increased life bar, and being better equipped.

Sorry for the total geek out post. (-: It certainly isn't a matter of life or death whether or not you consider Zelda an RPG (-:

Well, I think the "less RPG like RPG" group is closer to Adenture games than they are to the hardcore examples of their own genre.  For example, I see more in common between Diablo and Zelda than I do between Diablo and, say, Final Fantasy 7.

In Diablo much of your ability hinges on your items, with stats being a bit more secondary.  As well, you often just enter a room to clear it out in "tank" fashion, no matter what type of character you are.  There are also no timed battles, just simple button pressing strikes. Thus, I think  it makes more sense to call Diablo an Adventure, than to call it an RPG.
