Oblivion First Impressions

Postby JustLikeHeaven1 » April 23rd, 2007, 11:48 am

Well I took everybody's advice and I picked up Oblivion last week.  Here are my intial thoughts.

*The game looks amazing...until you step outside of the sewers and into the massive world.  This game clearly cannot be handled by either the PS3 or the 360.  It looks so damn good, but when things are popping up left and right and grass is literally growing as you walk along.  It makes it very hard to keep you planted firmly in the game.

*I have been trying to stay on task and focus on the main quest at hand.  There is almost too much to do in this game.  Personally I like my RPGs to hold your hand a little and gently push you in the right direction.  First I was walking everywhere, but dammit that takes forever!  Thank Christ for that instant travel option.  Yet I feel like I miss out when I do that so I try to walk/ride a horse to most places.  Sorta damned if you do damned if you don't...

*The physics in this game are great!  I love the combat and it feels so satisfying to shoot an imp in the face with an arrow.  A huge plus from this gamer.

*The spoken dialouge is great and its really well done.  It reminds me of the classic 3DO game Star Control II (damn that games is a masterpiece).

*Overall I'm having a good time with Oblivion, yet I'm not loving it.  I have probably sunk a solid 4 hours into it, but I'm willing to do a little bit more.  Also I should note that I haven't leveled up once...that really sorta def sucks.  Anybody know what I'm doing wrong.  Any advice to maximze my experience with this game?

Efficiently leveling up requires looking at your character's major skills and
being sure to use them as often as you can.

Go into the game menu, and you'll find a screen that has your major skills (as well as your secondary ones), and you'll see little status bars that fill up as you perform a particular skill.

The game levels you up when you've leveled up these major skills somewhat equally. So, if it has been a long time since your last level up (or your first), there is probably a major skill that you haven't practiced. You can also see a status bar on your overall progress to your next level.

Fortunately, many skills are very easy to "button mash." For instance, to practice your destruction skill, just keep hammering away at some kind of low level destructive magic- many characters start out with a simple flare spell. You don't even have to shoot it at someone, you can just shoot fireballs at nothing!

As to your other impressions, yeah, Oblivion's got alot of draw-in. I didn't really hold it against it though. There's quite a bit for the ol' 360 or PS3 processors to chew on!

Not loving Oblivion? This is a certainly a case where it is you and not the game. This game is amazing and I don't like RPG's! Of course, I say that I sunk 85 hours into it.

Holding your hand? I thought the game did an amazing job at tracking your quests and telling you what to do next. I played 85 hours of this game and was only stuck once or twice! That is unheard of in an RPG.

I agree with you on the pop-up but I still felt the graphics were amazing. I loved the change of seasons and always believe I was fullly immersed in the game.

Well I certainly like the game, but it has a lot to live up to since I've read nothing but glowing reviews and comments about it.  RPGs are my favorite genre and I have played through tons of them.  That being said the few hours I've put into this game is hardly enough to judge it.  I need to do what Rob said and learn how to level, because I have not yet leveled up and its really annoying.  That is my fault...not the games.

I forgot to mention how much I love the combat in this game.  The sword fighting feels great and being in the first person view really allows you to gain an apreciation for the combat.  Its like playing a super crazy version of Might and Magic (old 1st RPG's from the 90s).

I guess now that you mention it the game does guide you along pretty decently.  Perhaps its just the fact that you are constantly barraged with new quests that its hard to keep focus on what you want to do.  I dunno.  Once I sink my teeth deeper into the game I will let you know what I think.

I just want to say that I said it was a good game, but I thought it had issues.

Read an online guide on how to level. There is a way to cheat leveling but I wouldn't do it... it ruins the fun.

By the way I was just goofing on you when I said "it was you not the game" although after I read it I was like "man I am a jerk". Anyway, I felt the same way as you like "holy cow! I have so much to do" but what I did was just relax and do the quests that I wanted. If you want some instant gratification go to the Arena (Imperial City, I think) and participate in some fights; it's a good time. Remember this; you can do anything in this game or you can do nothing. Whatever you want. I just focused on the quests and the guilds that I was interested in at the time and eventually I got through everything. I think you could wrap up the main quest in about 20 hours or so but what is the fun in that? Enjoy the game. I really believe it is one of the best games of all time.

Hm, haven't actually played the game, but I've been looking into it. Am I right to assume that it's somewhat similiar to an online RPG, just not online, actually has a story and isn't unplayable in that you can actually stick your nose outside the city gates without grinding for a week?

Exactly.

What Shawn just posted is right on the money. Just relax and cruise around and see what you can discover and see what kind of trouble you can get into. There is no rush to finish this game. I know people who logged 50 hours and never did any of the main quest.

There is a 360 game called Two World which looks like Oblivion but you and 7 friends can get online and do whatever privately. (Not a MMORPG) That looks pretty sweet

Yes Adamant, I think your assessment is correct. To me, Oblivion is somewhat like all of the better elements of a MMORPG without the negative parts.

The only thing that would make Oblivion perfect would be to allow a multiplayer mode where two players could freely explore the same gameworld.

Don't worry man...I didn't take any offense to it.  I apreciate your comments though.  I think it will make the game more enjoyable when I go back to it.
