I really have to disagree with the comparisions to Oblivion and an MMORPG.  I've played several mmorpgs and Oblivion doesn't really play anything like those games.  Most mmorpg's are very structured and the game is all about leveling up to a certain point.  Oblivion isn't like anything else I've ever played.  Even the character creation in Oblivion is far more abstract than most rpg's in general.  While Oblivion's world is huge and beautiful it feels really empty a lot of the time.  You can wander around for a very long time and not even run into any enemies.  Oblivion is more of a sandbox (I hate that term, but it fits) action RPG of sorts...if that makes any sense.

Hey Just like Heaven. Make sure you sleep in the game. If you never sleep you will never level up. Another word of advice don't go into dungeons with vampires. If they bite you you will have 24 hours to heal it at a temple or your going to have to turn into a vampire. Being a vampire is no picknick.

I'll plead ignorance to that issue, I suppose. I've never thought to get into MMORPGS, so you are probably right.

Maybe they are the best things ever, but I only got so many hours of the day! (-:

Thanks for the tip...I think its time for me to read the instructions cover to cover tonight.  I only browsed through it and I think I need to really read it.

This game is so deep and there is so much to do...again thanks for all the tips.

They aren't the greatest thing in the world, but some of them can be really fun.  You just need some friends to play with you.  Sometimes strangers are fun to adventure with, but most of the time its a pain.  Honestly I prefer to play offline stuff, because its far less time consuming.  If you are really weary about the whole thing I would recommend trying City of Heroes/Villians or Guild Wars.  Both are great, don't require too much time and offer up a heavy dose of action.  Guild Wars doesn't have any monthly fees so its a great place to start.  If you can get past all the immature people and strange acronyms for EVERYTHING its a really great time.

I'm actually wondering how these games might be on consoles...the PS3 and 360 would be perfect for testing out a nice mmorpg.  Has anyone played Final Fantasy XI?  If so is it any good/worth picking up?

If you haven't already, pick up Morrowind: GOTY ed.  It's set in the same universe and although not as graphically impressive, the world is bigger and there are more places to explore.

No. Okay, it's true that I don't like the genre, but my friend who was playing it with me, and who DOES like the genre, agreed that it was a horrible game.

What was so bad about the game (if you don't mind me asking)?  I've heard that its based on more oldschool mmorpgs (ultima, everquest) rather than the new player friendly ones.  Anything that sticks out in particular? Thanks.

On the 360 version you've got to install 5 GB worth of crap on your harddrive. There's no voice chat either so you'll have to be typing away versus the usual, "Hey, what's up?" you get via xbox live.  Of course, that might actually be a plus.

Yea I guess most people don't like Final Fantasy XI.  The game is only $20 brand new and I was curious if it was worth investing in.  I think I would rather stick to better games than FFXI.  5 gigs of crap must take a long time to install on the 360 too...man that sucks.

I still have high hopes for a decent console mmorpg.  Its only natural that those games eventually end up flooding consoles.  I heard Square Enix is creating a new console mmorpg that is going to be a brand new IP.  I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that it turns out decent.
