Versions

Vicarious Visions and Treyarch are both developing the Spider-Man 3 videogame. Because of their different ideas for the game, the versions of the game will be different for some consoles.

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are very much the same, with the exception of the exclusive content for the PlayStation 3 Collector's Edition. The PS3 Collector's Edition version will include the ability to play as the New Goblin using the SIXAXIS motion control to maneuver the glider and will also feature additional commentary by Bruce Campbell. This version of the game is being developed by Treyarch.

In this version of the game, Spider-Man will start in his usual costume, before switching to the black suit at a certain point. Spider-Man will remain in the black suit until a later point in the game, when the player has managed to rid him of it. Different moves will also be available while in the black suit.

After completing the game, the player gains the ability to switch between the two costumes, black suit and red suit.

In this version of the game there are 10 storylines (with 10 villians) and players can swim and free-roam the subways/sewers.

The game also includes animated blood.

The Collector's Edition will only be available for PS3 and will include Spider-Man 3 webisodes, movie cast and crew interviews and the New Goblin (Harry Osborn) as a playable character.

Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP

Vicarious Visions is developing the game for the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. The PS2 and PSP will both receive the same game design as the Wii version. The Wii version will however utilize its Wii Remote to perform various moves and deliver the sensation of swinging through the city via the Wii Remote and Wii Nunchuk.

It was revealed on IGN that these versions will include 2 bonus villains: Morbius, the Living Vampire, and Shriek.

The PSP version will offer an expansive free roaming city. The PSP, PS2, and Wii version will have a city that is 2.5 times larger than the city in the PS2 version of Spider-Man 2.

According to GameStop/EB Games they will exclusively carry the Spider-Man 3: Special Edition game for the PS2 which will include: a bonus DVD featuring "Spider-Man 3: The Story Behind the Web", an exclusive interview with Stan Lee, the Spider-Man 3 movie trailers, and a collectible lenticular card with an image from the movie.

Unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, in which Spider-Man's transformations into black-suited Spider-Man are scripted events, the player will be able to use the black suit at any time, and switch between it and Spider-Man's regular costume at will. This suit powers up Spider-Man's attacks and allows him to move faster. However, there are drawbacks to this. Over time, if the player does not switch back to the regular suit, Spider-Man's Rage (which is represented by a meter and a black haze that builds on the screen) will increase. If the Rage meter is filled, Spider-Man will black out and wake up in a completely different part of the city. Also, there might have been a situation (such as a robbery) that he might have missed. When this happens, the city's Satisfaction Rate (their confidence in Spider-Man) will decrease. Excessive use of the black suit for prolonged periods will cause the city to spiral into a state of disrepair. Trash will litter the streets, the skies will turn grey, and the number of enemies will increase. Hospitals will leave the city, making it harder to find one and heal yourself. There will also be different unlockables compared to the PS3 & Xbox 360 version of the game.

Nintendo DS

A version for the Nintendo DS will be released as well. This version, like its Wii cousin, will be developed by Vicarious Visions. The DS version will use touch screen gestures for combat, webbing, and interaction. It will also lack cinteractives, and instead focus on the gameplay. It will also feature a free-roaming New York like the console versions, albeit slightly smaller.

The black suit is handled differently as well - when Spider-Man gets angry enough, he transforms into the black-suit automatically and starts to use his new abilities mid fight.

Other formats

There will also be PC and Game Boy Advance versions of the game. The PC version is a port of the Xbox 360 version by developer Beenox. the PC Version will have the Game Design of the PSP, PS2, PS3 and Xbox360 Version.

Don't buy any version; they all suck. If I hadn't read the reviews I would have went with the Wii version; clearly the controls would be fun? All of the reviews I have read (for all versions) make it seem like a rush job. Too bad b/c the prior Spiderman games have been decent.

I just picked up the 360 version and I'm quite happy with it.  It does feel a lot like Spider-Man 2, but many of the nitpicks I had with that one have been addressed (except the camera which, although better than before, still has a tendency to fly all over the place).  And the game really looks nice and doesn't suffer from the loading problems that plague some other 360 titles.

But yes, seeing as the games are by different developers, get a copy Treyarch's verison (PS3/360) and then one by Vicarious Visions (PS2/Wii).

Oh, and one more thing, kind of off the question at hand.  Has anyone noticed that basically every actor from the film (including J.K. Simmons; yay!) reprises their roles for the game, but Kirsten Dunst does not?  She was in the Spider-Man 2 game, though...

Yeah, they wussed out though by bringing him back, explaining his craziness as being the result of control from an alien, and resurecting all the lanterns he killed.  Oh, and now he's all buddy buddy with Batman.  I wish they'd just kill someone and leave them dead.  Even Jason Todd (Robin 2 for anyone who doesn't read comics) is alive again.  I mean come on, that was the best comic's death of all time.  He was beaten with a crowbar by the Joker and blown up (or caught on fire, my memory is hazy from the tears I cried as a kid when it happened).

Well, so much for the PS2 version. All the other platform version get favorable reviews and then we get the to the PS2 version which gets slapped with a 3.5 / 10 from IGN. ouch. Not totally surprised as second rate versions (not talking about graphics) of games are coming out on the PS2 now that 'next gen' is here to stay. Then again, spiderman: the movie, spider-man 2 and ultimate spider-man were all great games on the PS2. Very odd Spider-Man three should tun into a piece of trash.

Rented Spider-Man 3 for PS2 yesterday. Played for about three hours. Graphics are fair with your feet disappearing in the flat textured grass (whoops!), control is solid but the gameplay so far is average. Mostly the missions have been save cops, disarm a bomb, photograph a lizard. There has been one good mission where you battle the Lizard and hordes of small lizards. Using the black suit makes you literally five times as strong. After struggling to battle the lizard I donned the black suited and easily dominated him then. You have to switch back before the symbiote overwhelms you and knocks you back pressing a timed series of buttons. In fact there are many instances where scripted  spidey events require you to press the proper face button when prompted. Overall the game is no more than a C- at this point with the city web slinging and black symbiote powers being its saving grace. I haven't played Spider-Man 2 so its conceivable that my initial score could have been lower had I played that game first as its considered much better.

The Wii version hasn't fared much better.

Time for the updated review of Spider-Man on the PS2. Clocking in at about 4 1/2 hours actual story game play making the story 40% completion of the game, kind of short but I'm not one to complain is this was an amazing four and 1/2 hours but its not.  Fighting is the standard  combo fighting where you alternate between triangle and square. There are special attacks but are rarely used and useless against bosses. You find missions by going on glowing circles a la GTA. Then you swing across town which is somewhat fun and faithful to the movie in the animations side of it but is not as fun as it should be because of the actual graphics - more later. Most levels consist of fighting hordes of easy enemies with the same basic moves (unlike Devil May Cry which made doing it so much fun) followed by a boss consisting of attack, dodge his predictable pattern, then go on glowing piece on the floor, press a series of buttons as they come up to unleash a scripted event. And these button combos are a joke. Here's an example: Press square and a scripted animation occurs, three seconds later press circle and the scripted event continues. The scripted stuff looks nice but that's the problem, all the cool moves are automatic with the button presses. Some battles are decent such as riding the lizard while balancing yourself which is no problem for any tony hawk vet and of course swinging away from a moving drill through an underground sewer while avoiding open flames in your swinging path is satisfying but overall the game is boring including the final battles where its the same three step formula as mentioned above. Then there are the annoying side crime missions which are pathetic. Someone is kidnapped. Do you crash through the glass of a building and save the day? nope. Rapidly press triangle to open a trash can and there she is. A mugging? Don't track down the purp, open a trash can where they left the purse. And these trash can finds include finding stolen jewelry and explosives. Are you kidding me? Someone steals from a museum but leaves it in a dumpster? Enough of this. Finally donning the black suit  was the only good part.  Boss taking little damage to your attacks? - No problem, don the suit and now your destroying him and knocking him down without effort. Just make sure to do a scripted button pressing event to take off the suit before it makes you pass out. Don't worry; enemies wait patiently as you time the presses and recover from turning back to regular spidey. Now to graphics. Animation is smooth, Spidey and enemies are rendered well and the webbing is very well done but the buildings of New York are flat polygon boxes, the grass has no texture and your feet disappear in the grass. Take the great city in spider-man 2 on the PS2 and cut the resolution and polygon count by three and you have the crummy looking world of Spider-Man 3. And the games still chugs!! In game CG cut scenes are taken of the PS3 and XBOX360 versions and butchered down with heavy artifacts in the scenes. Music is solid, sound effects are above average, and voice acting is a mixed bag with Jameson being the standout. Overall the game is an F.

So, uh, Penny-arcade has weighed in on it.  I think they thought it was sub par.
