The Best Console War ever?

Postby netslacker » May 7th, 2007, 5:48 pm

the best console war in my opinion occured between approx 1977 and 2007.
to some of us it's still hard to decide to play our vectrex over our gamecube,
or tg16 over ps1, or wii over wonderswan.
take 2600 vs ps3 for instance.
2600 games sell for as low as a penny on ebay!
games are fast, if you want to jam out to phoenix before school/work
in the morning and only have 10 minutes.... no problem!
ps3 has tremendous graphics and a bazillion colors on screen at one time.
online gaming so you don't have to see your 'friends' to wip their a** at
  a particular game.
                                      seriously though
if i had to narrow it down i would say nes vs sega master system in the states... but only because the eight or nine of us in the states that owned the sms were really loyal!

Well being loyal comes easy when you have the better system.  I mean, if you like "blinky screen of frustration" volumns 1 through 800 then the NES had it all over the SMS.  Otherwise, the SMS was the better choice.

[/QUOTE]No, I prefered the superior games on the NES. The "blinkies" didn't come until later, but even then, the games were so good I put up with it.

the sms had better arcade games, double dragon on the NES was a sham, but overall the NES just simply outnumber the SMS when it came to good titles.

The Best Console War ever?

No question: The greatest console wars occurred in the 16-bit era.  At long last, Nintendo's stranglehold on the industry had been broken, and here came Sega, David-like, to take on Nintendo's Goliath.  And Sega ate their lunch.

Both systems were respectable, but what really made it all great was the hype.  Genesis does what Nintendon't!  Forget bits, what about Scaling and Rotation?  Congress--friggin' Congress!--getting in on the action complaining about blood and violence!  Sonic!  Mario!  Side-by-side demo machines in the stores!  And then there was the image being cultivated as Sega tried to distinguish its machine as the choice of adults, releasing darker, more violent games, painting Nintendo as the console for children.  And even the hardware demonstrated the differing approaches, with the Genesis looking black and angular and serious, like a high-end piece of stereo equipment, and carrying labels like "16-bit" and "High-Definition Graphics."  The SNES, meantime, looked simple and pleasant and approachable, with a more muted and inviting appearance that made no boasts on its plastic face except for the word "Super" appearing before "Nintendo," which was almost synonymous with "Fun."  The controllers on both machines were an evolution of the previous generation, with Sega giving us ergonomics and Nintendo giving us six buttons (including shoulder buttons--oooh!).  And while each system had its exclusives, some games came out on both platforms, and the different ports demonstrated the different strengths of each machine.  Brilliant, lush colors showed themselves on the SNES while the lightning speed of the Genesis gave twitchers something to smile about.

Excitement, drama, propaganda--the 16-bit generation had it all.
