TMNT has been around for a long time. Prince of Persia hasn't.
Umm, as a franchise, Prince of Persia has been around for quite a while.  It started out as an Apple II game in the 80s, the same decade that birthed TMNT.  Although I will agree that Warrior Within was horrible (didn't play Two Thrones), I still love Sands of Time and that's not going to change.  But considering Dave's inital opinon of TMNT, wouldn't it make sense to put the game that's kind of its inspiration back through its paces? Although perhaps a difference in scores between the two games would reflect a preference for one series over the other, and if that was the only reason, it wouldn't be fair.

Same debut year as TMNT games. 1989. Prince Of Persia original was a great game as well. Before the hard drive went two years ago, used to play two years ago on my 1992 LC 520 Macintosh.

Specs:
20MHZ Motorola Processor
8MB Ram
??? graphics card
80MB hard drive.

Oddly enough it was more reliable and consistent than my 600MHz celeron with 64mb ram in equivalent capability wise programs (pound for pound). What I'm getting to is that this version is an extra in the PS2 version of Sands Of Time which makes the game even better. Sands Of Time is an A title.

That's exactly what I'm talking about.  Comparing TMNT and Prince of Persia as franchises is an apples and oranges deal.  Having said that, though, a rereview of Sands of Time is in order if the new TMNT game (from which it takes many of its cues from) is decent in Dave's mind.

Oh and by the way, the original POP is a bonus in every version of Sands of Time, whether PS2, Gamecube, Xbox or PC. It's unlocked when you finish the game.

I thought Sands of Time was a brilliant re-imagining of the original. I played one of the SNES ports back when I was a kid and it was one of my favorites (even though SNES fans didn't really like it).

The sequels, though, went in an odd direction and it really hurt what could have been a classic 3D franchise.

Thats the problem with the copy cat schematic that the industry follows.  Sands of Time had a wonderful whimsical setting...God of War hits and all the sudden angst is in so it needs to be injected into everything.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with angst and anger, but it doesn't fit into everything.  It fit with God of War...Prince of Persia: Warrior Within...not so much.

The worst thing a game developer can do is make their franchise, "more edgy".  A game can grow up without having to succumb to siren song that "Extreme Attitude".  Sure you may nab a few more 13 year old fans, but your core audience will shake its head in disgust and move on.  This happens to the most promising of franchises.  Jak and Daxter had a wonderfully bright future ahead of them until they decided to make the game all dark and edgy.  Some people like it, but again I feel that there are better ways to improve a game.
