Sonic (Wii) and Rocket Slime (DS) First Impressions

After a year and three months of not being sick at all, I finally got a cold/flu bug of some kind.

Which meant I got to stay home and play videogames. Ah, sickness!

Rented Sonic (wanted to rent Heatseekers, but alas, they didn't have it) and Bought Rocket Slime. Here's my initial take:

Sonic:

Wow. I'm really impressed by this one. Although the dialogue is utter crapola (I'm looking forward to the inevitable You Tube mash-ups), the fast and furious action is not. There are some incredible set pieces in the game, as well as _just enough_ platforming action to make it not feel completely "on rails."

I'm thinking that maybe games like this and Umbrella Chronicles will begin a Wii oriented game genre: The semi on rails game. Where, yes, you are on some kind of fixed path, but you have some ability to manipulate your surroundings.

The graphics are also very impressive. This is the first game on the Wii that has truly looked better than a Gamecube effort. Lots of great looking lightning, very fast framerate, and only once did I notice any draw in, and it was very small. Good on Sega for getting more out of the machine.

Also, the Wii remote implementation is very good. Haven't played any unlockable mini games, and I don't I'll care that much about them.

So far, I'm rating this a bit higher than the consensus.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime:

Also a good first impression. Clever and funny dialogue combines with a friendly 2D setting. Some of the things you can do as a "slime" are fun, such as stretching out and bouncing around. Haven't played as much as this, as Sonic is a rental and I'm on the clock!
