When worst is best?

Do others find that often a "watered down" home version of a coin-op is better than the real thing? I have recently gotten into MILLIPEDE, and while I have the Coin-Op ROM on MAME, the Atari computer version, and a great GBA version, I find the blocky, simple 2600 version to be the most fun, especially with the great 2600 trackball. Sure the mushrooms are blocks and the DDT bombs say "DT" but let's face it, the coin-op wasn't the prettiest game around anyway. Graphics are not a big deal here, and the 2600 plays an extremely fast, mean game! Especially on the Flashback 2.0 with it's clear audio/video, this is more fun than any of the "superior" versions.

Are there games where others feel that simpler is better?

I've got two more for you.

Ninja Gaiden and Rygar both for the NES are way, way better than their arcade counterparts.

Mortal Kombat 2 in my opinion was better on the home versions. Especially the SNES version.

Contra on the NES made us all forget there had even been a coin-op version.

Space Invaders and Astroids were much better on the VCS than the coin-op.

The Atari 2600 versions of Missile Command and Battlezone. Missile Command is a lot less frustrating than the arcade version, and Battlezone's rasterised graphics look better than the original vector graphics, in my opinion.

Do you mean to compare games that are both great in gameplay but have different graphical qualities or games that are just better than a more "advanced" version?

QF- Just any game that was better than a supposed "superior" version. I have others:

2600 Breakout: Better control, better color, and around 8 different "tones" to choose from beats the coin-op!

Frogger: MOST home versions are better than the purplish, kinda sloppy coin-op, but especially Colecovision-Beautiful graphics!

5200 Joust: My favorite Joust, hands down. Others seem too "gravity heavy", pulling you down too fast. Here you can soar and swoop; really, you can fly sooo fast! Also, the "hard" level is the easiest! Just stay on bottom and jump the few blue knights that DON'T fall into the lava! Sweet!
