I'm not going to lie, Hawk looks both insane and badass- at the same time. I was kind of surprised he was the RPG critic!

Hey Critic are any of your friends good at Mortal Kombat? If so I would like to face off against them.
Nah just kidding about facing them but I'm a 14+ year old veteran. I've been playing MK for life.

I have to finally admit. I've played the PS1 for a total of about 15 minutes, and the PS2 a total of about half an hour. I've only bought Nintendo stuff every generation, mainly because of the games and controllers. I may not be a fanboy, but I'm definately biased, and I do feel that this site may lean slightly in that direction (which of course, I feel there are plenty of reasons to do so).
So Shawn is swimming a bit in unfriendly waters...at times.

What's funny about Shawn is that he does actually seem to have multiple people using that name on this forum.
Shawn "A" is probably the original. He doesn't really care for the Wii, but will usually say something to the effect of "if that's what you like, good for you." That's fair enough.
Shawn "B" trolls the boards and pops up not just when the PS3 is disparaged, but even when someone says *anything* nice about Wii or its games. He often uses insults (like calling people stupid, for example) that are below the usual level of discourse.
Has there been some hints of unfair criticism leveled at Sony? Probably. But no more so than any other system here.
In any event, there is sort of a "stockholm syndrome" going on here lately, with people sort of running to Shawn's defense. That's fine. Except I doubt Shawn cares that much. Shawn "A" and Shawn "B" love to stir the pot around here, and perhaps both "versions" of Shawn understand that when you do that, you are going to get criticised. In other words, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!!
There is one example of someone who (perhaps) favors their PS3, isn't afraid to say it, yet doesn't act ridiculous about it. JustLikeHeaven seems to be pro PS3, but I haven't seen him troll and rip other systems.

Well I dunno if I favor my PS3, but I do like it. I am not upset I bought one though I admit that I probably could have waited.
I feel like Sony made an amazing machine. You get alot of bang for your buck and once more games start coming out it will be easier to justify the price. Although a price cut would certainly entice those on the fence. I think the inclusion of BluRay will turn out to be a great move as you are already starting to see developers complain about the lack of space on DVDs. If you give developers extra stuff to play with eventually they will use it.
In my eyes Sony is doing exactly what they did with the PS2. They took their time and created tons of fresh new IPs and let go of some really big franchises. Everybody forgets how Metal Gear Solid 2 was only a timed exclusive for the PS2. Sony has always been able to harvest fresh innovative IPs while letting other franchises slide to other companies.
Look at the heavy hitters from the PS1 and compare them to the PS2. Totally different crowd of best sellers. Unlike Nintendo where you have the same franchises that you know are gonna be good, Sony seems to keep a few big ones (Final Fantasy comes to mind) and then create new exciting IPs.
I think the competetion has grown in leaps and bounds this generation and Sony will not dominate. I still think any gamer how loves videogames should eventually buy a PS3. Right now I see Nintendo reclaiming its throne for at least a little while. Microsoft is doing pretty good too...
Honestly its a really solid crop of consoles and you can't go wrong with any of them. Good time to be a gamer if you ask me. The only thing that I can guarentee is that by not owning all three you are going to miss out some great games.

Simple jealousy...........plus Mozart and Paul are in love with each other so they defend one another.....kind of like Nintendo Superheroes........
It's true that I am attracted to Paul's quick wit. It's hard not to love the intellectual quips he's employed. But Shawn... it's you I really love. I prefer the macho dumb-guy approach any day of the week, especially for the gritty back-room activity.
So Shawn... I was thinkin'... I dunno... that maybe later... we could go out for... some ice cream? *blushes*

@ m0zart: LOL.
@ JLH: I largely agree. Thank God for free market capitalism! It has produced three great consoles and will continue to produce many tremendous games. It's very exciting to be a gamer right now.
I'm basically locked out of a PS3 via the "wife hitting me on the head with a frying pan" rule. Well, just kidding: if I really pressed the issue, I suppose I could make it happen. But the PS3 is going to be this generation's Gamecube for me: a system I pick up pretty late in its lifecycle when the system itself is (hopefully) cheaper and the games are more plentiful.
I just can't have more than $700 (depreciating) bucks tied up in my gaming hobby, so I had to make a choice. I think that, even if you don't like Nintendo or Microsoft, it would be hard to argue that you would be better of in the _short term_ with a "Wii60" combo.
And we'll see about that new IP. It's bold but it could backfire. I haven't been terribly impressed by Heavenly Sword, but that's totally aesthetic at this point; mostly I laugh at the ridiculous outfits they have the main character wearing. I mean, c'mon, would a fierce female warrior really wear that sort of ensemble? You can see part of her butt cheek sometimes in the game pics! I really wish some developers would take BioWare's approach and design female characters that, while certainly good looking, are actually somewhat realistically presented. Like Bastila in KOTOR, for instance. Or even the women from Jade Empire.

Well, so far Nintendo has been far and away the leader in efforts to target women, and for the most part avoid the "female ideal", Zero Suit Samus, nonwithstanding.
Have they had a better idea than Mii's? Genius. Put Mario and co. on the bench and let you play as yourself or some other creation. I think it was a big step for them to launch Wii Sports without any Mario in it, and women dig it as well.
As far as how women are potrayed in games, well, some of you are just going to have to blame yourselves. Afterall, they are making these games for YOU, you pigs!

Yea it really is risky, but its a high risk high reward type thing. I think the fact that they have tons of 3rd party stuff (pretty much the same as 360) helps though. If they have a few of those IPs blow up into huge franchises then it will help the PS3 greatly. If all of them receive tepid reviews and crummy sales then the Sony will be one unhappy company.
If I was a betting man I would say that Heavenly Sword (yea, she needs some bike shorts or something...she could get a butt cheek rash), Folklore and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune have the best chance to succeed.
Heavenly Sword should satisfy the God of War crowd, plus the red headed hottie main character will garner even more attention. Also the fact that Andy Serkis (the man behind Gollum and King Kong's animations) is heavily involved in the game is highly intriguing to me.
Drake's Fortune looks like a hybrid of Tomb Raider, Gears of War and Indiana Jones (sounds awesome to me). This could be a darkhouse canidate for Game of the Year. If Naughty Dog can work its magic properly then gamers should be in for a treat.
Folklore looks to be a crazy action adventure game with a Tim Burton style atmosphere and Devil May Cry Action. Check out this trailer...

Also there is a recent rumour that Free Radical's new shooter, Haze, is going to be a PS3 exclusive of sorts (might be timed like Virtual Fighter). It is sort of odd hearing rumors like that since I'm so used to it being the other way around.
Will it all work out for a solid first year? Probably not...but Sony is setting the machine up to succeed long term. By the end of 2008 I think people will be singing a different tune about the PS3...I could be wrong though.
