Hi, forgive me for being dumb, but I've been itching to play some old NES and SNES games.  Not really enough to warrant buying the systems, and I've always heard about downloading them and playing them on computers.

(1)  How do I do this?  Is there a good website for this?

(2)  What about controllers?  No way I'd play those old games with a keyboard...

(3)  Free?

I appreciate any info.  Thanks!

I would steer your towards the "links" section of the site, and to the "Console Classix" link. That's a cheap and legal (sorta legal anyway, but better than piracy IMO) method of playing NES and SNES on your computer.

1) Many sites, use google. I prefer Nesticle for NES games, ZSNES for Super Nintendo, and GENS for Genesis. I'm not too sure for other systems

2) Most emulators have support for gamepads.

3) Of course they are free, if any site tries to make you pay for it, do not use it.

I would stay away from the console classix site as they require you to sign up and may have a very limited selection

Nesticle is a horrible, horrible emulator. Try FCE Ultra or NNNesterJ

Nesticle isn't that bad, it plays NES games a lot more accurately than SuperNes emulators like ZSNES and SNES9X do for SNES. I can't believe SNES emulation is still so lacking these days, are there any alternatives to those two?

...did you download some old versions by mistake or something? Both ZSnes and Snes9X are excellent, NESticle, while it was good in it's day, hasn't been updated in about 5 years, and is just too much worse than the alternatives for anyone to consider.
Pretty much everyone recommending Nesticle have never even tried any of the other emulators out there.

Maybee some of us prefer dismembered hands as our cursor

Emulator=program to run the game
ROM= game file
you need both

Thanks!  I went to console classix and downloaded their emulator to play NES games.  Old school heaven......Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Double Dribble...almost all work perfectly except for a few.  You have to pay $5/mo for SNES games and I'm not quite that there yet...

I need a gamepad though...any recommendations.
