So what's wrong with Red Steel?

Postby Atarifever1 » May 20th, 2007, 4:56 pm

I was just in the city so I picked up a copy of Red Steel for the Wii.  I knew reviews had not been kind, but a couple of friends recommended it, and I always go with what friends suggest over what reviewers suggest.  In any case, I am very pleasantly surprised.  It's not the best game I've ever played, but it's certainly not too shabby.  I found the controls easy enough to get used to and have sunk about three or four hours into the game already.

I know it's certainly kind of generic as far as enemies and weapons go (I have played enough FPS games to recognize generic when I see it), but the art direction is pretty solid, and the game feels like a really, really strong first attempt for the system.  I don't know; I just don't see what there is to dislike here.  I have Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Sonic and the Secret Rings, and this is currently my favorite Wii game.  It's odd considering that the FPS is just behind GTA style and puzzle games on my list of most disliked genres.

It's funny that when I was getting depressed with the Wii (with Sonic control issues and an inability to get online) it would be one of it's poorly percieved games that would make me enjoy the system again.

Red Steel has some of the worst controls I have ever experienced. The Graphics are meh, and the multiplayer is super meh. It would be worth say, 20 Dollars but 50? Like it was at launch, thats just nonsense.

It would be easy for anybody to come on and destroy Red Steel. I have played just about every FPS out there and Red Steel is easily the worse one yet. The important thing is that you enjoy the game. Who cares what the critics (or me) have to say. People didn't like Full Auto but it is one of my favorite 360 games. Maybe one of my favorite games of all time.

I agree that it wasn't to shabby of a game.  I liked the swordfighting alot more than the shooting action, though.  I just lost interest in the game a little sooner than normal because of the sluggish camera and how long it takes to turn around to respond to threats behind you, stuff like that.  At least the camera was sluggish until you increased the sensitivity, then it seemed too erratic.  The graphics were weak, but i didn't mind it so much.  I might have gotten the hang of it if I had stuck with it a bit longer, but other games grabbed my interest at the time.  I might pick it up used sometime.

Glad someone else thinks this way about the game. I really do believe that it was a victim of "group think" by the various review outlets.

Funny how people who don't like this game use the canard of "I'm an FPS expert." Well, I've played games in that genre going back to freakin' Catacombs 3D in the 1980s (John Carmack and John Romero's first attempt even before Wolfenstein). It's not like Red Steel is the first one I've ever played.

Is it a good game? Uhhh, I wouldn't go that far. But it's an average game that's fun. I think that's a good description of it. And I think it is a solid start to what all reports indicate will be a franchise with sequels. Hopefully future Red Steel games will incorporate whatever Metroid Prime 3 does (since we know that MP3 will probably largely innovate the FPS on Wii).

Still haven't got the controls with Sonic under control? That's too bad, b/c that is a solid game. You have 3 of the worst big name Wii titles, btw dude. I would agree with Shawn, Red Steel is the worst FPS I have ever played. Call of Duty 3 isn't bad, (but not pretty) however. Try some games like Elebits, Excite Truck, Godfather, Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Trauma Center and Rayman. Those will snap you out of the funk for awhile.

You guys are right about Ecitetruck. I played it a little and I have to say its pretty cool. Especially the deforming terrain.

I don't have call of duty.  Also, I have Godfather on Xbox and Zelda on Gamecube, so I won't be buying Godfather on Wii until there's a major price cut and have no interest in Zelda on the Wii at all.

Red Steel already has snapped me out of my funk.  I got it home yesterday and I already sank 6 hours into it and am turning it on again in a few minutes.  No accounting for tastes I guess, but I really, really like it.  I've  played Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake 2, Unreal (a bunch of them), Hexen, Doom 3, Half Life, Halo, Zero Tolerance, Ashen, Red Faction, Geist, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime Hunters, Goldeneye, Turok, and a pile of other FPS games, so it isn't like I'm unfamiliar with the genre.  I can't help what I like, and I really like Red Steel.  It'll be awhile before I'm in the city again, so I'll have a lot of time to think on my next Wii pick up.  I'm thinking it'll be Mario Party 8 or Excite Truck (which I've played enough to know I'll agree with the critic on).

I just put up a review of Red Steel in the "Your Reviews" forum.  I wrote it a few months ago and posted it on my blog, so feel free to check it out.
