I will preface this by saying I have never had any problems with my machine before.
Anyway yesterday I was playing and the system suddenly failed with a noise from the disk drive indicating that was the problem. Since then the system will start up and games won't load, with the same noise coming from the disk drive.
The usual voodoo of turning the machine on it's side or whatnot reduces the noise but the games still won't load. Is the system dead or can it be fixed?

This may sound stupid, but if you own multiple systems, make sure the PS2 video/audio cables are hooked up/selected. I was sure my PS2 had a problem last month, and turned out I still had my XBOX cables jacked in!
Have you tried multiple games? I've had more problems with dirty/ scratched discs then machines (I test them)...Window cleaner cleans discs well, also make sure then lens is clean. Try an Audio CD too to narrow down problems.
Beyond that, I can only wish you luck! Hope it's OK.

It appears the disk drive is completely gone. I am going to have to buy another one, which I could have done without.
It seems my Saturn has just gone wrong too. It was causing games to freeze earlier and now I can't get any sound on it. If it breaks down as well on the same day my PS2 has gone it may well be a case of a grown man crying.
