The Original Tomb Raider

Believe it or not I never played Tomb Raider back in the day and my only experience with the series prior to this week was a demo of one of the more recent ones on the PS2.

I had heard that the original had not aged well to say the least so I did not have high hopes for it. Nonetheless I got a copy of it for my Saturn and I'm playing through it now and I have to admit it is actually quite good. Once I have got my new PS2 (damn thing really is done for good) I might even get that remake they have just done.

Anyway I do have a question, was the Saturn version a wise choice? (I bought it because there was a copy in the shop when I was buying some other stuff), would I be better off getting the Playstation version?

I've never plated the psx version so I can't compare. But wikipedia reports that Tomb Raider was orginaly designed for the Saturn's quadrilateral-based hardware. So I dunno?

No don't get the PS1 or Saturn version.  Those games didn't age well with their horrible graphics and controls.  They just remaded it for the PS2 using the Tomb Raider Legend engine which has much better controls, and looks amazing.  I hope they bring it to the 360.

The Saturn can rarely match the 3D graphic quality of a Playstation game, but I hear Tomb Raider is very close translation, so it probably wasn't a bad choice.

Dave, I'm a "Tomb Raider" whore (but only for the original game)!  Played  and beat it twice on both PSX and Saturn.  I even finished the N-Gage version of "Tomb Raider" (a shrunken port of the original).  I've kept the Saturn version (sold the PSX version eons ago because I've kept all the PSX sequels) and it's about a 90% facsimile of the PSX version.  There's less detail (more grain) on Lara & the animals' polygon models and the backgrounds, plus a few scenes (like the T-Rex battle) chug a little slower on the Saturn than PSX.  The CG FMV breaks are also more compressed (ultra letterbox) and less smooth on Saturn than PSX.  Control, level design and playability wise both games are 100% identical.  If you were starting from the beginning I'd say go with the PSX version, but since you've already started with the Saturn feel free to continue.  Both games have aged so much since their debut 11 years ago (!) that graphics shouldn't be the main criteria by which to judge this game.  This is an A+ adventure game in my book.  Wait 'till you get to the Cistern level (my favorite) and keep a FAQ Guide handy!

Sorry for the nitpick but it should be "main criterion" as criteria is the plural form of the word and referring to graphics is tantamount to solely referring to one aspect therefore the singular form of the word works perfectly.

About the game itself, I am quite enamored by the environments but to me, the controls simply feel stale and lethargic since it tends to take a few seconds before the controls register with the game making it gratuitously complex just to execute some basic maneuvers like jumping.

The original tomb raider was amazing. One of the best games. Yes, the cistern level was awesome. Never used a FAQ for this, but it took me months to finish. My only criticism was the last level which was so so so SO frustratingly difficult.
