Mortal Kombat Wii Opens to Strong Reviews

Postby feilong801 » May 26th, 2007, 12:34 am

Reviews for Wii Mortal Kombat are opening up strong. Looks like Midway made excellent use of the Wii Mote.

I'm looking forward to hearing more reports from early adopters of the game. I love how multiple people can square off using classic versus motion controls.

I had to chuckle at IGN's review though. Yet another "works 95% of the time" complaint about Wii motion controls.

I find this "bullet point" ludicrous much of the time, since thumbstick controls, especially for complex fighting games, NEVER work out 95% percent of the time. Shoot, I'm still trying to perfect Feilong's flying kick special move in Street Fighter Anniversary Edition, and I even have a fancy schmancy fighting stick for that! Yet I never hear reviewers knocking a game because they can't land the moves 100% of the time.

Sounds like the IGN boys need to admit that it could be.... operator error?

Anway, I hope someone picks up this game so I can hear more about it (already tapped out my gaming budget on MLB 2k7).

I've been hearing very mediocre reviews but maybe I'm not searching in the right places.

So when is this site going to be renamed, from "The Video Game Critic" to "The non-Nintendo Video Game Critic: The Wii Adorer."

Isn't this game like 2 years old? I HOPE the Wii can handle fighters otherwise it is another genre it can't handle.

This brings up an interesting question: if Midway could make a fighting game with Wii controls, why is Nintendo still going to use to GameCube controller for SSB:B?  Interesting...

I'd like to pretend what you just said was a meaningful piece of human communication.  I'd also like to have a billion dollars.  Some things will just have to remain dreams.

I'm basing my statement of an early metacritic score of 79 (one 80 and a few 75's, I think, make the average). Perhaps "strong" should be replaced with "solid" in this case.

If the reviews you've been reading differ, please post- I'd like to read them.

@JasonhasRSI: So, yeah, I'm not going to talk about a video game system on a video game site. I'm never going to talk about the Wii here ever again, because you zinged me so badly. Nice job! Now I'll go lurk in a thread about the PS3 so I can insult JustLikeHeaven... oh wait. I forgot. I don't do that.

@Shawn: I hope the Wii can handle any genre, in an interesting and new way. If the controls are well done, then I can deal with a two year old game.

@Whoever said this: MK's motion controls are for the special moves. SSBB doesn't have special moves in the same way. You can also use the classic controller and Gamecube controller in MK.

[/QUOTE]Has it been confirmed that Brawl will use the classic or GameCube controller?  So far all I've heard has been speculation.

I think I'm gonna pick up Armageddon.  I never bought the game on the PS2 or Xbox and I have a feeling that the motion controls might make it alot of fun.  At the very least I will be renting this.

Alot of the times when Wii games get 75-80 for scores I end up REALLY loving them.  Tiger Woods, The Godfather and Sonic are all perfect examples of games that did average in the media yet I fell in love with.

The Wii is great because a game that should be a boring and stale port (like The Godfather) can really be enhanced with a great control scheme.  Its 100x more fun to actually swing the remote to punch someone than to just press a button.  Same thing goes for Madden.  Madden has sucked for years, but the Wii version finally restored my faith in that franchise.  It was just so much fun to play.  Usually when a system gets old ports at the beginning of its life cycle its really bad...yet some of the Wii ports have actually been better than the PS2, Xbox games.  It really surprised me.
