Mortal Kombat Wii Opens to Strong Reviews

Postby feilong801 » May 26th, 2007, 9:51 pm
I think I'm gonna pick up Armageddon.  I never bought the game on the PS2 or Xbox and I have a feeling that the motion controls might make it alot of fun.  At the very least I will be renting this.

Alot of the times when Wii games get 75-80 for scores I end up REALLY loving them.  Tiger Woods, The Godfather and Sonic are all perfect examples of games that did average in the media yet I fell in love with.

The Wii is great because a game that should be a boring and stale port (like The Godfather) can really be enhanced with a great control scheme.  Its 100x more fun to actually swing the remote to punch someone than to just press a button.  Same thing goes for Madden.  Madden has sucked for years, but the Wii version finally restored my faith in that franchise.  It was just so much fun to play.  Usually when a system gets old ports at the beginning of its life cycle its really bad...yet some of the Wii ports have actually been better than the PS2, Xbox games.  It really surprised me.

I largely agree, which is why I find the "you gotz da portz" arguments to be shallow. Madden 07 on Wii was a huge surprise, and made me wish I hadn't bought the 360 version (although online play just barely makes it not a total bust for me).

Of course I want original stuff, but if you can totally revamp an existing game with great controls, I see no reason why that is a bad thing.
Has it been confirmed that Brawl will use the classic or GameCube controller?
As far as the Cube controller is concerned, it was one of the first things confirmed about the title after its unveiling last May.  The developers (who also worked on Super Smash Bros. Melee) said in interviews that the Gamecube controller would be supported, mainly to reduce the learning curve for those familar to the series.

Additionally, back then, they weren't sure yet how they'd implement Wii-Mote and Nunchuck support.  That may have changed recently, but Gamecube controller support is a given, yet there's no word yet on the Classic Controller (but I'd be shocked if it wasn't used).

Blah blah blah....port....blah blah blah port.....blah blah blah port..please.
Nothing has changed. The only good games for this system are first party games.

This is getting ridiculous.   The Wii has a wireless internet card inside of it. Nintendo has a web browser, and a "everyone votes channel."   Hey Nintendo, noone cares about that stuff, until you get these games online.  Its 2007 and Nintendo still can't figure out how to get console online games, yet even the DS is online.   The Xbox has had online games ever since Mech Assault in 2003 so what is the deal? Hell, the Dreamcast was online in 2000.  I think the Saturn even had an online service, though crappy.  I hope they figure it out at least by the time Super Smash Bros comes out, this is just stupid.

Yeah its good that Mortal Kombat turned out ok control wise, but I don't know many people in real life who are good at fighters.   I'm gonna pass because I can't play online.

We should all appreciate Shawn's courteousness by "blah-ing" out his usual stuff instead of just repeating it ad nauseum.  Even he realizes he's just repeating the same tripe over and over again.

Shawn, take heart!  There's hope for you!

I can sense your frustration, and I won't try to dismiss it.  We're all in this for different things.  While I could usually care less about online play, I know that many of you enjoy it, and that's what you are looking for.

I was thinking though why Nintendo might be taking its time with the online-enabled Wii games, and I am centering on the idea that they just don't think their biggest buying audience cares for it.  I could be wrong of course, but I just don't think, on a hunch, that most people are buying the Wii in order to get online with it.

I know there's a segment of the gaming population that thinks online gaming is the future, but there's just as significant a section of that population that couldn't give a rat's ***.  Some of this theory is built off of the knowledge of the audience, Nintendo claims to be targetting, but even more is built off of the knowledge that the most successful system of the last gen was most decidedly not the one known for its online portal.

I figure Nintendo will eventually have more games that take advantage of this, but I have a feeling it will be a while.  They don't seem to be suffering from the lack of it yet, so I assume it will take a drop in sales to make this a more frequent feature as games continue to come down the pike.

You are correct to be irritated. To be sure, I'm not a huge online person. I do like using it on my 360 when the mood fits, but I'm far more likely to use it to voice chat with friends while we play different games.

But Nintendo is taking a risk by not getting online together. They have had a clearly different philosophy about online play- they are doing it on their terms, and not rushing around to do it.

I do highly expect they'll have it together for SSMB, though. And there are positive things to say about Mario Strikers online (other than the discouragement of playing people outside of your region).

If online competitive play is your thing, then the Xbox 360 is your system, hands down with little argument. The Wii just can't keep up with Xbox Live!, nor do I think Nintendo cares that much about doing so. They'll lose a segment of the market, but how big a one? Time will tell.

I actually not a big online gamer.    But 1 on 1 fighters practically beg for it.  If Metroid Prime 3 came with no online mode, I wouldn't care because its not that kind of game.  But the fact that this is a port of year old game that had multiplayer, and isn't included here is crappy.   So if I want this game, I get to choose between online or a new and what seems to be better control scheme.    Why is Nintendo still making me make these decisions in 2007?

Well you will only have to wait a month or so longer to get the Wii online.  Mario Strikers Charged and Pokemon are going to feature complete online packages.

I think we will be able to get a better picture of how things will go from there.  The only reason Mortal Kombat didn't have online multiplayer was because Nintendo wouldn't let developers go online before they did.  Since its a one on one fighter is really does hurt the game though.
