[QUOTE=m0zart]I love them in the same sense that I loved Zelda 2 -- an experiment that worked well, but I was glad the whole series didn't transform into that.

Nice to find someone else who thinks Zelda 2 was an experiment that worked well. I love that game. When you think about it, much of Zelda 2's fighting is closer to what is in the 3D games than the traditional Zelda formula is (what with the jumping strikes and more varied enemy attacks).

This has to be some kind of record for most consecutive off-topic posts in one thread.

My friend, this isn't even the most consecutive off topic posts in one thread on this one board of the videogame critic forums this year.

mOzart: "I think you say these things just to be cotroversial!"
That's funny coming from a guy who EXISTS to be contoversial.
YES you do. Go ahead, deny it. Wanna fight about it!?

I say those things to get a laugh.
So far I'm batting 0-0.

There isn't a ton wrong with the game on its own, but it's when you compare it to other action games you begin to see some glaring faults.
Case in point, play through Devil May Cry or Devil May Cry 3 (both, preferably) and then try to go back to a God of War game. The combat feels exceedingly button-mashy and far less skill-based. About every battle can be won by brute strength, and there isn't much incentive to employ more than a couple of the attacks in your arsenal -- you'll basically find the two that are most effective and use those throughout the game. Also, the deep (by Action game standards, not RPG standards) character building system in DMC3 encourages repeated play-throughs, while God of War's is thoroughly standard and there isn't much reason to play on "God" or "Titan" mode unless you enjoy turtling up for long stretches of a battle.
The God of War series is fantastic, with a great look, score, and story. But I don't think its quite the pinnacle of action gaming on the PS2.

Played Devil May Cry 3, still like God of War more.
